If it is on the top of the turret or the sides then it is probably for the tape that shows the tank as a friendly on IR and NV.  I could be mistaken but thats what sounds like he is talking about.  What you might want to do is just start looking in books and on the internet to find the answer.

Try masking tape. I tried it on an M-60 and it looks good after you've painted it.

I don't think farley's referring to the L-shaped velcro strips on the turret face where the CIP's are/were attached, rather the long strips which run across the turret front & down the long axis of the turret. Am I right farley?

Here's a couple of pics which may help identify exactly what you're asking for.

This one is an M1A2 with the turret front CIP's mounted. http://data.primeportal.net/m1_iraqp/Maqudadia%2010-8-03%20182%20(50).jpg The CIP panels have L-shaped velcro on the corners of both sides.

This is an M1A1 without the CIP's mounted, http://data3.primeportal.net/tanks/miloslav_hraban/m1a1/images/m1a1_04_of_16.jpg  but with velcro on the front faces showing (a) the mounting position for the CIP's and (b) the long strips going down the front face beside the mantlet and across the full width of the front face and along the base of the turret sides, for mounting the sensors for the MILES gear.

I concur with M1 A1 A2 .  Without seeing a picture or a better description, it sounds like he is talking about the CIPs on the front slope of the turret.  These do have "L"-shaped pieces of velcro on all 4 corners as well as the corresponding "L"s on the turret front slope to secure them to.

To represent velcro, you can apply thin pieces of masking tape, painted green.  Or green decal strip applied works too.  You can also use thin pieces of 0.010 sheet styrene applied to the tank and paint it green as well.

Good luck.

Gino or Rob could probably answer more definitively, but I believe they are strips which highlight when viewed through NVG's. IIRC they were added when the CIP's were no longer needed. Happy to be corrected...

Hi

If you had a picture I could tell you for sure. But it is either velcro for holding on MILES gear while doing training at a place like NTC or it could be part of ID Panels to help frieldies ID the tank as a friend. I spent 6 years on M1A1's and M1A2's and these are the only 2 thing I remember that it could be. Anyone else got any ideas?

On the M1A1 turret to the left and right of the main gun what is the item that looks like masking tape?
