Richard Petty Belvedere Instructions needed please
Posted by wingform84 on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 12:43 AM

Hi, I'm new to the forum, seems like a great place.

Anyway after searching Google for a while and coming up empty, I thought I'd ask here.

I have a Richard Petty's1964 Plymouth Belvedere made by Lindberg (kit #72164) but no instructions.  If someone has these instructions and could get me a copy I'd be really greatful! Thanks. Smile [:)]

I currently have a 64 Lindberg Street Belvedere in my collection and could photocopy the instructions for you.  I am familiar with both kits and outside of the roll cage which should be fairly self explanatory and the presence of the Hemi, everthing is and goes together the same really.  The headers for the hemi go together very positivelly with a nice flat mounting surface and the exhaust hooks up to them the best of any kit I've ever built.

I'll get the instructions and decal to you in the mail on Tuesday.  You may want to coat the decal with some micro decal coating, can't remember the exact name right now but its by the same people that make Micro Sol and Micro Set etc.  It's designed to keep together and save old decals.  Might not be needed but why take a chance.  You could also spray some testors Glosscoat over it before use too.

On these old Stock Cars if you like them there is that whole series of Modifed Stockers from the 60's from AMT that are currently reissued and on the shelves through Model King or Dirt Track Race Cars.  These are like the 66 Chevy , Buick Skylark and Olds 88, 65 Fairlane, 69 Torino, 65 Chevelle and so on.  .He has also released many of the early 70's nascar series by AMT with an incredible two sheets of Generic decals which carry at least 3 number designations or Combos with numerous sponsor combos, some of which can be cleaverly combined to make actualy replica cars that did run, (a little cut and paste)  Out now is the 71 Cyclone, which on the box art has a green GTO passing it in the high groove that is a model lettered by me, 72 Ford Torino and 75 Chevelle Laguna with a 72 Monte Carlo on the way.  Many of these can now be obained at your LHS and if you don't have a good one, Hobby Lobby.

Other Annual type kits still availabel have great Nascar versions in the box while the box art doesn't say anything, ie the AMT 66 Ford Galaxie and 69 Torinos which has everything you need to the Dukes of Hazard Charger, which is actually a charger 500.  You'll need to fill the grille on that one flush all the way accross and locate appropriate Holman Moody wheels and tires.

Finally check out the Decal Man website.  He has vintage stock car kits galore, and the wheels,  tires and even Generic but nice roll cage you'll need from Performance Plastic Products.

Thanks.  I've had to use Testor's decal bonder before on some old decals to make them work right, I had bought one of those "make your own decals" kits at Hobby Lobby (the only LHS that has a good selection of model kit stuff, all the others closed Sad [:(] ) and never did get it to work right (clear wasn't thick enough to hold the right color and white was just.. too hard to cut out) but still have the bonder left over.

I've seen the Modifed Stockers kits before, and even thought about buying on a time or two, I thought they were more of a "destruction derby" type car though than a Stock Car style, at least some of them (like the 66 impala) look that way.  I'll have to check it out though, I wish I could find pics of one someone had completed though.

The Modified Stocker series was a line of kits first released around the early '70's in an effort to get some more mileage from existing tools. What they did was pretty much destroy the tooling by cutting huge fender openings for the tires made for the series (they were the same size as the MPC 1/20 scale Granatelli Turbine Indy car rear tires but with no tread and 1/25 wheel openings) and the removal of the molded in chrome side trim of the stock kits.

Most had simple roll cages but a couple (the '64 Galaxie comes to mind) of the original kits had nice racing parts that were included in the MS series also. Some of the kits have since been returned to showroom stock with varying degrees of accuracy.

Here's my build of the '64 I did for a friend who worked on the real car but I have substituted some more scale like tires to replace the kit items.

Nice job Mitchum, and see, they really can be turned into something special.  Easy to add detail.

Wingform,  Just so you don't worry, I wasn't able to get the instructions and decal out yet but I'll mail them on the way home from work tonight.  So hang in there.

Thanks for the update, in the meantime I've actually been looking for reference pics for the colors and stuff, and the details too, but it seems I can't find hardly any.  The most popular of Petty's cars I find is the Superbird, and I can't really find any other cars.  I was also trying to find some other cars I might would be able to make outta readily available kits, and while I can find lots of text info, I need pics.

Though I did come across these two kits down at Hobby Lobby that look like they might be useful for this kinda thing and thought I'd share.

And also saw this one, its not exactly a stock car but it was on clearance down to like $5 I think and wondered if it'd be worth the cash
