I use aluminum foil and Micro Metal Foil Adhesive from MicroScale exclusively. With the  type cars I build I usually wind up using oftimes rereleased kits or salvalging vintage buildups and the little extra thickness of the foil compared to BareMetal helps hide some of the imperfections in the kits.

There's no real way to repaint chrome.  If it's a small spot, I've patched it with bare metal foil, or a Decocolor Silver Ink pen.  The other way would be to strip the entire part and use Alclad II chrome to paint the whole works.  IF you can get the Alclad II at your LHS or shipped to you.  You base the part with water-based gloss black and then paint the Alclad over the top.  I did the side pipes and wheels with AlcladII on this build - -
