It feels wierd for some reason to quote myself.

Other than the MFH kits, there are a few other manufacturers. Some of the kits seem to be pretty rare and therefore expensive, but that is all I could find.

A good link is www.italianhorses.net where there is a nice database of tons of Ferrari kits.

Thanks, but I went through that already...

Reading rush lyrics (I strongly advocate all fans checking out 2112.net/powerwindows) and looking at wikipedia at the same time... it does wierd things to your brain.

Ah ha! thank god for wikipedia links!

Neil Peart, who had joined Rush a couple of years earlier and who has been a sports car enthusiast all his life, read the story. Flash forward to 1980, and he decided to write a song for the band featuring a science fiction story line inspired by the R&T article. He substituted his all-time favorite car, a Ferrari 166MM

Here is an interesting note about the song, and it may help in finding which car they are talking about.

Sorry, smeagol, I misunderstood your other post.  I just read it again, and it's clear, but I somehow didn't read it right the first time, or something.  I'll do a quick look-around and see if I can come up with one that would work given the song.

[edit:] Here's one I found.  According to the infor, it has a removable top, allowing it to be made into a barchetta (open top) or berlinetta (coupe):  http://ehobbyland.stores.yahoo.net/ta2fef501scp.html  Hope this helps.

The barchetta is the illegal car, but they mention the air cars as the one he races.

My uncle has a country place
That no one knows about
He says it used to be a farm,
Before the Motor Law
And on Sundays I elude the Eyes,
And hop the Turbine Freight
To far outside the Wire,
Where my white-haired uncle waits

    Jump to the ground
As the Turbo slows to cross the Borderline
    Run like the wind,
As excitement shivers up and down my spine
    Down in his barn,
My uncle preserved for me an old machine,
    For fifty-odd years
To keep it as new has been his dearest dream

I strip away the old debris
That hides a shining car
A brilliant red Barchetta
From a better, vanished time
I fire up the willing engine,
Responding with a roar
Tires spitting gravel,
I commit my weekly crime..

    Wind-
    In my hair-
    Shifting and drifting-
    Mechanical music
    Adrenalin surge-

    Well-weathered leather,
    Hot metal and oil,
    The scented country air
    Sunlight on chrome,
    The blur of the landscape,
    Every nerve aware

Suddenly ahead of me,
Across the mountainside,
A gleaming alloy air-car
Shoots towards me, two lanes wide
I spin around with shrieking tires,
To run the deadly race,
Go screaming through the valley
As another joins the chase

    Drive like the wind,
Straining the limits of machine and man
    Laughing out loud
With fear and hope, I've got a desperate plan
    At the one-lane bridge
I leave the giants stranded at the riverside
Race back to the farm, to dream with my uncle at the fireside

The timeline and story are scifi/futuristic.

I know it would be a sports car, just Im not familiar with those to say what it would be or wouldnt be.  I was hoping someone could point in a direction (something not wallet breaking price wise)

The "red barchetta" of the song isn't a "future" car.  The song says that "my uncle has kept for 50-odd years" and that the car is a "gleaming red barchetta from a better, vanished time".  So, in keeping with the song, the car would almost HAVE to be a sports car, and probably no later than 80's.  I've always thought of something like a Ferrari.  The "air car" mentioned is the "law" that tries to shut him down during his "weekly crime".

Sorry for interupting, but I love that song :)

well, the story for red barchetta is a scifi one, actuially, in the future where there are laws against cars that use gas.  They mention some type of air powered car.  But the song came out in 81, so whatever model barchetta came out before then.

Ahh, gotcha. I'm not familiar with the song, but I read a synopsis of it. Interesting idea. Anyway, a barchetta is typically a 2-seater roadster with a bare minimum amount of equipment. Think of the Ferrari 166 as an excellent example: http://www.italiancar.net/site/news/07/0701/ferrari_60_years/Ferrari_166_MM_1948_b.jpg
Model Factory Hiro has a few in 1/24 scale, but they are in the $250+ range.

There are not many modern examples of true barchettas, though Ferrari brought back the name for the 550 a few years back. For the car in the song, that may be a good one to try out, but I haven't found one in scale yet. You could probably modify a Ferrari Superamerica kit; it and the 550 Barchetta are pretty similar.  http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews/convertibles/0109_ferrari_550_barchetta/index.html

I mentioned the Fiat Barchetta, although it is not really a sports car, so it can't really be included as a true barchetta either, only in name. Of course, if that's all you're looking for, then it should do nicely, as it is available in kit from from Fujimi, probably for around $30, if you can find it. I have not looked for ith though/

What model of Barchetta? The Fiat Barchetta? Ferrari [insert number here] Barchetta? That is a little too generic of a term, and I think we'd need more specific information to help you out...

Anyone know where I can get one?
