Police Vehicles?
Posted by rbkep on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 1:01 PM

Hi all!  I am new to car modeling (usually I'm over in the Aircraft area) and know that FSMers, no matter which "genre", are THE source to go to if looking for an answer.  Bow [bow]

would like to know if anyone knows a good source for police vehicles, the newer model year the better.  I know police vehicles are modified "civilian" vehicles so in essence, just about any vehicle model is potentially a police vehicle. However, I'm more looking for a kit that is already set up as a police vehicle.

That said, specifically, I would like to find a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria.  I think I got a good lead on some light bars, so finding the Crown Vic would be great.  Any leads or ideas?

Thanks for the help!

Rich

I just got a Lindberg 1997 Crown Vic on Ebay. It's a snap together though. Not really very detailed, but seems pretty nice. I'm going to scratch build a lightbar for it to match the NC State Troopers cars. It doesn't seem like they would be too hard to make from spare clear sprue. Finding decals seems to be the hard part for me. I found one source, but he doesn't seem to be taking new orders right now.

I saw a couple Chevys on Ebay too, but didn't pay much attention to those.

The police vehicles do seem few and far between.

I'd like to see the Michigan State Police with the big red bubble on top...or one of their new Dodge Chargers (they should put the big red bubble on those too).

Current fairly easy to find police vehicles include the Revell Impala (2000-ish), snap kit but can be detailed into a nice build, Lindberg mid 90s Crown Vic, again snap kit but decent detail, and Lindberg Dodge Charger (2007?). Revell also did a mid 90s Chevrolet Caprice, it hasn't been produced for awhile but it is still pretty common on ebay.

Diecast offers a lot more options.

This site is probably one of the best to get current currently available items.

To all who've replied, thank you for the information.  Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I do have the Revell(?) Caprice (early '90's version) and an Impala.  I've seen the Crown Vics, but they seem to be few and far between.  I never really contemplated die cast, that opens up yet another door!

Agentg, with what department do/did you work?  I just got hired with the Connell, WA, PD. "My" car is an '01 Crown Vic with the Vector light bar. Since it's my first patrol car, I kind of wanted to model it!  Yeah, it's one of the oldest we have, but we're supposed to get a couple of new cars this spring and I should get one! Big Smile [:D]

Again, thanks for all the information.  I knew I could count on you! Bow [bow]

Check out this website. If I am not mistaken, the decal line Accu Scale/Code 7, that they sell as started by a LHS owner here in So Cal in the 90s. They were very good. He put LOTS of research into them.

Wow.  I'll never complain about needing a new vehicle again, after seeing you guys still driving around in 8 year old vehicles !  In my PD, the vehicles get turned over for auction at 30,000 miles, which takes about a year.

wow. Still driving an '01!!!!!  That horrific!!  The last vehicle I drove before I started using my POV with lights in it, was an '08 chevy Tahoe. Had EVERYTHING!  Second computer and com set in the back. Lightbar in front, signal master in back [both LED] and LED lights in the grill and on the pushbar.  Plus the strobes AND wigwags in the head/tail lights.  And above ALL else.....leather seats!!!!!  Course, thats cause my impala had a run in with a light pole the night before. LOL.  I loved driving the incident commander's vehicle though.

Thank you again to all who've provided the information I was looking for; not what I wanted to hear 'cause I wanted to build "my" '01 Crown Vic, but oh well. Banged Head [banghead]

Maybe I could modify one that's close to the model year? Anyway, your comments about my old car had me rolling! Big Smile [:D] Yes, it's an '01, but it only has 78,600 (and change) miles. Then again, our town is not very big, so we don't get a lot of miles on them; if nothing happens and I "patrol" a lot, I may put 50-60+ miles in a 10 hour shift. That's a lot of driving in such a small area! Best part is, even though I like this car because it's my first, since it's the oldest one used, when we get a few new cars this spring, I get a new one!

Thanks again for all the information and the stories. You guys are great! Bow [bow]

I'm pretty sure if you check the diecast in that policecar models site I posted, you can get a plain white unmarked diecast crown vic in a more recent body style. Just paint and decal to make it match yours.
