1960 Ford Starliner project!!!!
Posted by cruz on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 10:12 AM

I want to share this project with you guys here. This is a recent re-issue of this model and I just had to try to do it. I will be doing a custom version similar to this Impala I did about a year and a half ago.....

The first thing I did was re-scribe the very fainted chrome molding lines, this will give me a much better idea after the painting is done on where to begin placing the bare metal foil which in the case of this model, will be tedious and time consuming in itself. I also like scribing all the panel lines throughout the entire model including the trunk and door areas. I used some masking tape to be able to make the lines nice and straight.

I dipped some Model Master Metallizer paint into the scribed lines to demonstrate the process. I like using this paint because the consistency is ver watery. Once you touch the scribed line, capillary action takes over and does the rest.

The hood on this kit was just horrible. I had to work around it so that it would have the appropriate fit. I like using a heat gun that I purchased at Michael's to do this, only I have to be careful because it gets pretty hot.

After much tweaking here and there I am much happier with the fit!!!

This is the kit I am working with. I will also be adding a Model Car Garage photo-etch detail set to this project.

I also purchased this set of resin wheels and tires from the Modelhaus, I think they will compliment this build just right. Modelhaus has some excellent resin products, if you haven't seen their products your'e really missing out on some great stuff.

This is a mock up of the model before I start on the paint and the rest of the project details. I am using a spare Starliner body from a previously purchased kit I had laying around. The actual model I will be using is in the primer stage.

The chassis and the engine details are almost ready to go. The next thing after painting the body will be the interior!!!

Currently, I am working two jobs so my time at the bench is limited making this build a slow and dragging affair. Hopefully I will be attacking this project a little more agressively in the next couple of weeks so that I can probably have it finished in a reasonable time.

I am thinking about painting it Mica Red from the Tamiya line of paints. I also purchased a Pearl clear from Michael's. This clear has a very light pinkish tone to it and I am hoping that once I use it in conjunction with the Mica Red that it will give the Mica Red a distinctive tone. The top will be white but it will also have the pinkish pearl tone over it. Hope you guys like this project, I will be adding progress pictures as I go so please bare with me!!!Whistling [:-^]

I remember you Impala and this Starliner is bound to be just as good looking too.

I have the firt issue of the kit and the same detail set but it stalled due to a bad paint job. Maybe your build will kick me off in the right direction.

Well guys, I am kinda surprised by what just happened over the weekend with the painting process of this model. I went to Michael's some time ago and purchased a can of Pink Pearl clear to use on top of the Mica Red paint I decided to use on the model. I really thought that by using this clear the Mica Red would have a slight shade of pink, at least that was what I was hoping for. Well, no chance of that, as you will see on the pictures below.

This is the Pink Pearl clear.....

This is the Mica Red.....

This is the results after adding the clear......

I am not too fond of it but my wife says she loves it, I will call it my Mary Kake Liner. I will be polishing it next after making sure it's completely cured and later I will be adding the bare metal foil and the photo-etch parts, I think it will look a little better after this. Hope it works out......Confused [%-)]

Well guys, I stripped the paint, was not too happy when I started rubbing out the finish! Went out to Pep Boys and bought some Dupli-Color paint and repainted this thing. All I need is the clear and a Pearl White top and I am done with the painting.

I like to use this Dawn Power Dissolver, works great to make the Tamiya paint dissapear!

As you can see to the far right of the hood. there are shadows after polishing the paint that I was not too happy with...

I have finally gotten a bit of time to work on this model. I added some Bare Metal Foil and painted several accents around the body.....
