What is the best metallic paint for scale model cars?
Posted by Redfinger on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 7:45 AM

I use the term "best" very loosely here, what I mean is that I have often found that metallic paints dont look in "scale" w/ the models they are applied to.  I am thinking fo painting my current project a gunmetal grey, many cars today have this finish, it is a nice dark grey w/ a metalic sheen to it, not a pearl, just some metal flake it looks like, then a nice heavy coat of clear.  And seeing how this is my first car model in many years, and afv's usally dont have metallic finishes, I am a little lost....any suggestions?

Try some Tamiya-I used some metallic blue (acrylic) and was happy with it.

For the exterior finish try Tamiya TS sprays or Zero paints (if you have an airbrush). Both are great.

Afterthought: for gunmetal, esp if you want it darker and not very metallic, you can tune it down with a layer of smoke as well. I did it a while ago with a Braun-sponsored Tyrrell, toning down light gunmetal (TS42, I think) with smoke (TS70-something) and it works really well.
