I would suggest using the white base to make the color pop more. As to the thinning ratio, 3 or 4 parts thinner to 1 of paint sounds thin, but will lay down great. With metallics, be sure to alternate directions, lengthwise one coat, up / down on the next to avoid the dreaded tiger stripes. Several coats are much better than fewer thick ones, just like aircraft. Follow the grape up with some Boyd's Ultra High Gloss (I think that's what they call it now) clear and you'll have a ride to be proud of.
