Pro Stock Tin Work
Posted by Pukindog on Friday, June 12, 2009 9:15 AM

Hi all,

I would like to know the best way to replacate the tin work interior of a pro stock racer. I was thinking of using aluminum foil, but there might be something better. Any help appreciated.

Couple of options-first, you could use Alcad, MM Metalizer or Talon Acrylic aluminum paints, if you use an airbrush.  Second option, is Testor's Chrome in a rattle can-I used it on a project and it looks pretty good.  Third option is aluminium foil or Bare Metal Foil (which I find hard to use successfully) or go to a Lowes or Home Depot (or any hardware store) and find some aluminium duct tape-heavier than Bare Metal Foil but thin enough for some applications.

Hope this helped.

Good luck and post progress pics.

If you want to use real metal, try a beverage can.  Most of them are coated inside, so you can use an aluminum polish like Flitz or Simichrome to remove the coating and polish the metal.  Once you have your sheet stock, make some card stock templates or use masking tape to get the outline you want to cut out, transfer it to the aluminum, then cut around the lines with sharp shears.  Instant panels!  They are easy to bend too.

I did this interior with Testors Metalizer Stainless Steel from a spray can. I then buffed it with a tissue.

That wing was made from Aluminum Printing Plate from a print shop. That stuff is very thin and can be cut with sissors.

Tried al foil on a Tam, Ferrari 312 T, stuck it down w/ adhesive size,(used for gold leaf.)looked o.k.  The caveat here is putting the glue on super thin & even, any thick spots and no amount of rubbing will cure those puckers.  If you can get the stuff to go through an airbrush you're a better man than I, it looks and acts like milkweed sap gummy as hell.                                 No9's hookin up hard w/ that testors metalizer, I would go with that... it comes in a spray can! what could go wrong?.
