Here is a photo I took at my model show I use to put on of a firetruck that the builder used Laces. I thought that it was a really cool effect. I am sorry, I connt remember the builder's name.

I agree.  We had a member of C.A.M.S. at Littlerock who built several firetrucks and said that he always used shoe laces for the hoses.

Flat shoe laces make a fair simulation of dry fire hose, especially white or light tan ones with a little weathering.  You're pretty much on your own for nozzles, though.
