True "Classic" Car series from Monogram
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, December 23, 2003 7:07 PM
Hello all!

A long time ago, Monogram sold a series of "Classic" cars. These were elegant cars from a bygone era, I think certified as Classic by a particular organization; cars like the Packard Boattail Speedster from 1930, or the Mercedes Benze 540K supercharged. Many of these classic cars appear to have been part of the famous "Harrah's" collection that was unfortunately disbanded when the company went bankrupt.

Can anyone tell me where I might find models of this series? In particular I'm interested in a few cars that I built as a youngster but lost over time; the 1930 Packard Boattail Speedster, the 1936 M/B 540K supercharged, the Cord 812, the 1940 Lincoln Continental.

Thanks in advance!

If I remember right, I had one from that series. It was a Rolls Royce Phantom

You might do a search on e-bay.
You can search by manufacturer either by year of car, or year the kit was dated if supplied in the seller's description.

For example, to find by year of car, just type in Monogram 193*
and hit enter.

The wild card " * " will get all references from 1930 to 1939.

Works much the same if the seller included year the kit was dated in their description. Say the kits you are looking for were released in the '80s.
Just type Monogram 198* and hit enter.

Works pretty good. Hope this helps!!

You may find some have been re-released by Revell in more recent times. I know Revell released the Mercedes 540K, possibly some of the others..

Jose,

I'd agree with the other posters -- eBay may be the best place to look for these kits. They've been re-released pretty regularly, and really aren't "rare."

This series came up in conversation the last time I was at Revell-Monogram, and according to the folks there, these kits never really sold all that well, even when they were new. Kind of limited appeal, I guess. It's too bad, too, because they're really nice.

As an Indiana boy, I've stockpiled a few of the Cord kits, but I still haven't gotten around to building any of them. The 1941 Lincoln is a nice kit, too.

Hope this helps!
