Caterpillar Engine Paint
Posted by Cbax1234 on Saturday, November 21, 2009 1:20 PM

Hello,

I'm building Revell's T900 Australia Kenworth and it has a Caterpillar engine.  The instructions say to paint it silver, and the box art shows it in silver, but it seems to me that it should be in Catterpillar yellow.  But, I'm having trouble matching the paint.  Anyone know a good mixture to achieve the correct (or close) shade of Caterpillar yellow? Thanks!

Krylon makes a Caterpillar Yellow, both old and new. I've also seen some other brands do an equipment yellow, which is pretty close.

Until some time in the 80s or 90s a lot of truck manufacturers had the motors painted their own color, not the motor makers colors. As an example Ford used Caterpillars in many of their trucks and had them painted blue, Ford even gave the Cat motors a Ford name calling the 3208 the V636.

I don't know if silver is accurate for that truck or not.

Okay.  I've never used Krylon.  Do I need to prime the plastic before using Krylon, or is it okay to use it directly?  Thanks.

I use Krylon a lot on car / truck models and have never had a problem, but I do use a primer. You are going to want the new Cat yellow, I have never found the exact cut off but Cat changed colors sometime after WW2, probably in the 50s. There isn't a huge difference if you get the wrong one, old Cat yellow just has more of a brownish tint to it.

I did a little checking around and that kit is supposed to be full of little inaccuracies like the motor color, not a bad kit just requires double checking on some of the details.

I have worked on a lot of the Cat 3406 series OTR engines and they were always painted the trademark yellow.  Other then the black radiator / Air intake  hoses and orange or blue turbo hose connections.

Mate,

Just about everything made now to Caterpillar specs is painted "New Cat Yellow" (a darker, mustard colored shade), as opposed to the original and older Cat Yellow, which is brighter and more yellow.

Valspar make the stuff here in Oz - and you can get it in a rattle can.  Or, have a look at any farm suppy places - they should be more than able to source a can for you.

Cheers, LeeTree

I drove an 83 Kenworth Gold Nugget and the Cat engine was white if I remember correctly
