I just finished my "sideshow" build - a 1:24 Revell Porsche Cabrio. I bought this kit on a traditional german flea market, together with two and half other car kits for a price of 1 Euro, so talk about a bargain. This kit was issued somwhere around 1996. Initially I tried to build it together with my younger brother, he was to paint the body (he has a talent for spray painting) and I was going to detail the "innards", but he turned lazy on this one and messed up, so late last year as I was sick in bed I decided to clean up. I stripped the paint with brake fluid and started building. I had to rebuild the windshield frame (it was broken when I got the Porsche) and the rear wing (the grille didn't handle the cleanup too well). I built the grille out of copper wire and styrene sheet and am pretty happy with the results.
The kit itself looks nice, with white styrene fret for the body, black fret for the undercarriage, engine and interior, and there is also a chrome fret for the wheels. There is some engine detail, but not a complete engine. The engine detail isn't too accurate neither, lacking the "varioram" intake manifold. I got the model without turbo, but there are some provisions for the turbo version. The instructions tell you to build 2WD machine, but all the parts for 4WD are there, so I built a 4WD car. I wound the front suspension springs with copper wire, but they aren't too visible. I left the rears stock and it doesn't bother anyone, because they are even harder to be seen. You even get pretty nice disc brakes with the kit, they also get hidden in the wheels. The biggest fault of the kit is the simplified and inaccurate rear suspension which in real life was quite complex, but also earned this model the fame of the "best 911 of all". There are some fit problems, particularily around the engine hatch (needs widening), front bumper (sits a little low) and mating the cockpit to the body.
In addition to the mods already mentioned, I also dechromed the wheels and painted them body color. I also modified the dash a bit, cutting a considerable chunk off of it where it joins the windshield. I replaced the engine hatch's hinge with metal and finished the mirrors with "chips bag" for more shine. Please take a look and write me what do you think:
