20s vintage wire wheels needed
Posted by Don Stauffer on Monday, June 7, 2010 8:25 AM

I want to do a twenties vintage racing car, based on the "police car" model T that has the beautiful Fronty optional engine.  The kit wheels just don't hack it (plus they are the wrong configuration for a racing wheel.

I know a few places have PE ww for sixties vintage or so, but I need something with big wheel diameter and narrow tire width. Anyone know a source of wheels like that?  BTW, what I want to make is a Fronty dirt track car.

I used to love those old finecast "thread them yourself" wheels, but don't even know if the firm is still in existance, let alone where to get them (they were an English company.

I was hoping to avoid scratch building rims. I will put it aside awhile if I have to go that route. I was hoping aftermarket wheels would be available.

If I do make my own rims I will use the fine wire lacing method for the spokes. I still have tons of the wire left over from the Finecast wheels on models that use them that I have completed.

Do you cast in resin or white metal?

Those were cast in resin, but good luck with your project.I have never seen wire wheels offered in kit form or a supplementary kit. I used the kit rims for the master and scratched a hub , that was easy, the spoke layout is the hard part ,but with a  Harley manual and lots of reference it is possible.

Don,

I am sure you have heard of Pegasus Hobbies.  They have a lot of aftermarket wheels.  Here is a link to scaledreams.com.  I have purchased a lot from them and they have a lot is stock.  I am not endorsing them or anything its just they seem to have more items available.

this link will take you to their supply of Pegasus Hobbies items.

I hope this helps.

All I could find there were modern, wide rims. I want wheels from the twenties, with typically four or five inch wide rims.

Yes, those would be about right if they were in 1/24 or 1:25.

I had built the Alfa racing version of the Pocher.  Fortunately I got it at a very, very big discount.  The wheels were nice- the rest of the kit was a bit of a disappointment (or would have been if I had paid the normal street price.
