1/24 Fujimi Toyota Supra help - fabbing an engine bay
Posted by Drake69 on Monday, June 28, 2010 3:26 AM

Ok. I've been into models for awhile, at least since I was doing Snaptite as a kid, but I got out of them for several years. I've always been good at following directions but never had any success with fabbing my own details, and now I really want to get into it. So, of course I start with a pretty hefty project right out of the gate!

I picked up a Testors/Fujimi 1/24 Toyota Supra Turbo kit (1988) with the hopes of making my current daily driver, and quickly learned the difference between fully-detailed kits and "motorized" kits (motorized kits have no engine in the bay and are for attaching electric or push motors to have the car run across the floor... ugh...). I found out later on that Tamiya (I think?) makes a "High Definition" kit for the Supra MKIII, but it's nigh impossible to find unless one shows up on Fleabay, so I have to make do with this one.

I did some research and quickly obtained a Toyota Soarer 3.0GT kit from Tamiya to allow me to "steal" the engine from it and put it into the Supra, but of course there is no engine bay to drop it into. I thought about chopping the front end of the Soarer and attaching it to the front of the Supra, but it looks like the clearances on the bays won't match up well. I've already opened the hood on the Supra in preparation for this project and now I'm at a loss as to which direction to go with next. The chassis that came with the Soarer matches closely with the Supra's frame, but does not align well at the bottom, so that route won't work without some fabbing as well. Anyone have any ideas?

Well I can't help you with styrene. If it was a 1:1 MkII I could help you. But good luck, and leave the Hondas in the dust, so they can rust.

On the desk, 2 Revell Blue Angel F-18's, Tamiya British Quad gun tractor, Tamiya Morris Mini

Get some underhood reference photos, some sheet styrene, and scratchbuild your engine compartment.

Good luck.
