What's the Madder Red?

 Mm now should I order one or two bottles? Jsut thought of something, if they are reffering to # 3 as Madder Red, then what is #68 lol

Hi Mike,

In the Mr Color (lacquer) range, #3 is just plain Red. #68 is "Red Madder"  Note that Me Color paints can also be thinned using Tamiya Lacquer thinner. Do not attempt to use an aqueous acrylic thinner (alcohol) as it will cause the paint to gum up. I suspect that this will happen with enamel thinner (eg. mineral spirits or similar) too.

I don't know if it's still available where you are, but it''s also available in the old Aqueous Acrylic range as H-86

 Thank you very much Phil..!! I just checked out Tamiya's website and see they have the laquer thinner being advertised but I can not locate it.. Maybe I need to get newe eyes...

Hi Mike,

Tamiya Lacquer thinner is (as far as I know) only available in the 250ml jugs, part# 87077 It has a yellow cap (as opposed to X-20A acrylic thinner with a white cap and their enamel thinner with the blue cap)

The lacquer thinners (both Mr Color thinner and Tamiya's lacquer thinner) are milder than hardware store lacquer thinner and are styrene-friendly. Curiously enough, both Mr color and Tamiya lacquer thinner can be used with each brand's acrylic paints.

PS: "Red Madder" is slightly more orange than the regular red.

Model Car World sells Ferrari red. Scroll down and you'll find it. They have 3 different versions; 50s - 70s, modern and F1. Their paint is lacquer. There's Tamiya TS 8 Italian Red or  TS 85 Bright Mica Red. HoK sells a Euro Red and Coast Airbrush will sell in small quantities(1 ounce and up) for a pretty good price. You can buy thinner and clear in small quantities from them also. They recommend against pre-reducing but will do it for you if you want. If you go that route I'd recommend still getting a little thinner so you can adjust if needed. There are other companies that will sell small quantities of HoK but Coast is the only that one that is authorized to, if that matters.

 Again thanks to all who responded..!! You guys have been a great help!! I just rec'd two bottles of Red Madder in the mail today which I ordred from Sprue Brothers.. Two days.. What a first great impression with the company!!

 Once I get the car all painted up, I will do a brief WIP with the final build
