An alternative to a working hinge is one that allows you to position hood in two positions- opened and closed. I find those easier to make than an actual working one in 1:25 or 1:24.  Working hinges aren't bad in large scale but I find it daunting in the normal scale.

To explain more fully what I mean; the hood can be closed- set in place normally, but there are prongs that fit in holes to hold it in an open position.
