Ferrari Enzo to FXX
Posted by macmac650 on Friday, May 27, 2011 2:54 PM

Hi everyone

I thought about this conversion for a long time. I purchased the Tamiya Enzo and the E-Jan conversion kit about a year ago whilst I was building the Valentino Rossi Yamaha YZR M1 2005 Valencia bike (I have still got it, and you guessed - it's still not finished).

The parts in the E-Jan kit are modified from the Tamiya FXX kit  I could have saved myself loads of money! but you must know what it's like-- I want to do that build.

At the moment I'm only home at the weekends due to work, but where I'm staying allows me to carry on doing some modelling. So I thought why not start on the FXX. I have collected as many photographs from the web as I could get my hands on plus I downloaded a build from modelersite.com. Then the fun began.

I will apologise now, I only had my mobile phone with me to take photos and I still can't get most of them off the thing (I will try to take a proper camer with me)

So far I have cleaned up: The bottom plates, dashboard, seats, engine and the rear suspension parts. I have also destroyed part of the rollcage (I replaced it anyway) and the rear airpipes (hopefully I can repair them)

I have built the engine, combined the rear firewall with the chassis and also tried to use carbon fibre decal to detail the dashboard and cabin area.

Hopefully I can get some photos to show the work so far.

Thanks. As you said Tamiya quality is great, it's trying to work with white metal and resin parts that I'm finding awkward.

Here are some photos of the work so far.

The new rollcage.

Dashboard painted awaiting carbonfibre.

Firewall secured to chassis

Fuel pipes made from various pieces of heatshrink..

Dashboard carbonfibre.

Rear shock absorber modified and drilled.

Rear shock test fit.

Fliud container with added fliud level.

Rear wheel arches carbonfibre.

Cabin carbonfibre

seat painted using "paint it suede" then painted black.

Fuel pipes painted.

Had another play with the clean carbon fibre decal (I used it on the rear wheel arches). This time I tried it on the rear cowl (not used for the Enzo to FXX conversion), I tried it as a single piece, yes I know this is not a good idea but I was only trying it. Yep you guessed it more creases than you could shake a stick at. I'm not happy with the difference in the weave pattern compared to the rest of the work I've done it just looks to big- not quite 1:12 scale and not 1:24 scale or is it me  ?    Anyway I think I'll strip the rear wheel arches and redo them with the normal carbonfibre. I'll try tdo do some work on the dashboard today- adding the air vent piping and photoetch parts.

looking good so far, carbon decalling is one of those things thats either a pleasure or a chore. What carbon decal are you using. Good luck with the rest of your build. Very interesting.

Thanks Terry

I'm using Scale motorsport Hi-def carbonfibre and clear carbon fibre,,but like have said I don't like the clear one so much as I think it looks to big. If you compare the rear wheel arch plus the rear cowl to the rest of the parts I've done you will see what I mean.  I will try to take a photo of both sheets side by side.  I would like to try the other types that scale motorsport produce in 1:24 scale, but it's trying to get hold of them that's the problem, plus they aren't cheep-- but the quality is what you pay for.

Hi Mac, I have some scale motor sport carbon as well. I have not usd it yet, haven't even taken it out of the pack. i did use one some years ago, extra decal I think. that was cheap and easy to use . I think I got it from hannants.

Loking forward to seeing you progress with this one as the car is a beauty and the kit is probably the best car kit I've ever seen and I have a Tamiya Catheram Super 7  1/12th in my glass case.

Thanks Terry

The motorscale decals are very good, you just have to remember to use decal solution when applying it. Good luck when you get round to using your decal.

Do you have any photos of the Catheram super 7?

As you can guess, I've been away for a while. I have decided to strip back the carbon fibre in the cabin area, but I think I need some help here so that I don't damage any of the other work I have done. Any ideas. I was thinking of using some of the decal solution to try to tease it off, I don't really want to resort to sanding.????????
