1:20 after market race car instruments ?
Posted by weebles on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 6:20 AM

Greetings all,

Does anyone make any auto or race car round analog instrument faces in 1:20 scale?  I thought that there might be some after market decals out there but have yet to find any.  Below is a photo of the car interior I'm modeling.  I could use aircraft dials and perhaps get away with it.  Any ideas are appreciated.

Thank you

Dave

You can easily enlarge 1:25 scale dials by use of a graphics program and enlarging by the ratio of 25/20, or 1.25.

If you can make your own decals (fairly easy for something like instrument faces, that is all there is to it.  If you cannot, for some reason, make decals, drill the panel and merely glue regular printouts behind panel.

Hi Don,

Thanks for the idea.  I actually found just the ticket!  Archer Fine Transfer produces a 1:35 U.S. Gauges and Interior Stencils set which has a number of dials that are exactly the right size.  I think what I will do is punch a plasticard dash and use these dials for my instruments.  The item number is used for anyone interested is AR35209B.

Broaden your search. Should be tons of stuff out there for the Formula One crowd. Their  main scale is 1/20. Strada Sports off the top of my head. But lots more.

Strada Sports did have instruments but all were 1:24 - 1:25.  Most of what they had was this scale.  I'm going to try some of the parts anyway.  Thanks for the lead.

Dave,

I apoligize. After posting, I did a quick search(that turned into a lengthy search) and I couldn't find anything. Those 1/20 f1 companies usually have very extensive parts lists. I assumed gauge faces would be no problem. Boy was I wrong. Maybe try an F1 modeling site and check for someone who has some snippets. At a particular site(pm me or email for more details)Be warned, I had a little problem with a few members(senior???) over there. They didn't like a newbie(who didnt post a personal introduction) asking a brief and to the point question about the availability of a particular decal.

I'll double check my decal stash. I might have an old sheet of f1.

Dave,

I found that old F1 sheet. Its a Tamiya  1987 sheet. It has Andretti, Nilsson, Reutem, Villene, lauda, and Watson on it. But no gauge faces. If you think it would work, I also have a Slixx #9526 T-bird Quaker State Kinser decal. It has 4 gauges that are 1/8 in diameter and 1 gauge that is 3/8 in diameter. These faces have the white background. I bought 10 sets of the kinser decal when they first came out. If this will work, I'll send it to you, no charge.

Embaressed, fellow race car enthusiast,

Hi Robert,

There's a lot for 1:25 but not much for 1:20.  It could be that for this car 1:25 would work.  Checking the Archer product for size against the kit dials I found them to be a near perfect match in size.  I'm ordering a 1:25 set as well to see how they will work.  Fortunately it' s not a big expense.

I also picked up some resin brake calipers which I hope will work out.  Again, a lot in 1:25.  Hopefully they will work out.

Thanks for looking.  Much appreciated.
