Dirt Car group build interest ?

i would definetly be interested, especially since revell is supposed to be re-releasing the 1/24 or 1/25 scale steve kinser sprint car. also have a '69 charger that i was working on and has been sitting on the shelf. this also may give me some motivation to finish re-decorating me die cast sprint car and dirt late model. mark me down for sure!

For the open wheel stuff (sprints, midgets, roadsters) there is a Yahoo discussion group, the open wheel modeling group.  You can go to Yahoo, and do a search on their discussion groups.

Thewildchild great ! I hope to get around 10 or so people interested and will set up all the details for the group. Maybe run it for a year ?

Don Stauffer I will check out yahoo thanks.  I have found a couple of  forums for dirt cars any and all of them, also some parts suppliers and one that sells some fantastic PE for sprints and modifieds. I believe he is planning on doing some PE for midgets but wont get to that until mid 2012.

i like the modern dirt stuff more than the older modifieds. just a bit more into what i can see on a friday, saturday, or sunday night at the local short tracks. if you like building modern dirt late models this site should give you some inspiration (or, like in my case, make me green with envy lol) here is the link:

Thewildchild yeah I found dirtmodeler and have a bunch of his photoetch stuff for sprint cars, its really high quality too. Before the move he was making a mold for sprint car tires but that may have slowed a bit. I really dont like the kit tires ya know. I also found a source for retro hoods from the late 70 and early 80s Gambler and Nance hoods, John can be reached by email at retro-racing25@cox.net. Let me tell ya these hoods are works of art.

I think you can tell I like the sprint cars both early and modern, my Dad and I went all the time from the mid 70s to the early 80s till he passed away. I started going again in 85 and was at Ascot Park every Saturday nite. Heck even back in the 60s we went there for TT motorcycle races, guess I almost grew up there.  I also like the old vintage modifieds you know the 32 Ford and Chevy types. I found a source for these models too, but am still waiting on my first order from them and don't want to recommend them yet. I also think it would be fun to build the old dwarf cars back when they had to have a cartoon character painted on them.

Seems like a good thread to ask this- is the Revell Kinser WoO Sprint Car- the new Bass Pro logo version, actually released and in the shops yet, or is it still a future release?

Don Stauffer I am not sure about that release, my LHS has it on order for me from October. Last I checked with them, a couple of weeks ago I was told the release date had been moved to January 31, 2012, then yesterday I heard rumor, just a rumor mind you, that the release had been canceled.

well i hope it's not cancelled. their catalog had it as a "fall 2011" release. i was really looking forward to get two or three and build them to my own liking (with my own sporsors, numbers, etc.) i have an Action #20 Danny Lasoski Mopar diecast sprint car that i dismantled and redecorated in my own numbers and Mopar decals from slixx (they were actually from the Mopar pro stock dragster) ant then put a mud coat on using brown weathering pigments mixed with water to form what are quite literally little clumps of mud. i did a lighter shade or brown pigment to simulate dry mud from hot laps and heat races and then a darker coat to simulate fresher mud. but heres the kicker: in handling the model i noticed all the pigment came off on my fingers. in my infinite wisdom, i figured i would add a clearcoat and it would be fine....the lacquer clearcoat destroyed the finish, turning all the "mud" a whitish grey. after about 35 hours just weathering, i had to dismantle the whole thing again and still havent got all the paint and stuff off......was actually thinking of waiting for the new kinser car to come out and going to put the engine, tires, and rear axle in to the revell kit. (sorry to get so long winded, but like to be descriptive)

I would be intrested in this GB if it happens. I would be build some cars from the late 60's early 70's. I can remember some cool car's from a dirt track I went to back then. Count me in.

Thewildchild seems the canceled rumor for the new sprint car release from Revell is just a rumor, the release is still on for the spring of 2012. They are saying there have been a number of setbacks but that the kit will be released. Maybe problems with new tooling ??

I received a model I ordered from Dirt Track Racers, a 1934 Ford Modified. It looks to be from old AMT/ERTL molds. I like what I see not much flash on the sprues and room for detailing. Should be a fun build. Heres the box art.

Nice boxing too, with a history driver of the modeled car, nice looking decals, and fast shipping, only took a week to get it from the day it was ordered. They are worth checking out IMHO, heres the link

I could be motivated to sign up, any older large sedan or station wagon could be a mangled up dirt tract figure 8 destruction derby beater, would not have to worry about chrome or even WINDOWS hehehehehe

Vettman42, Back in the day I went to a track in Staten Island, Wiessglass stadium. It can be found on YouTube or Google…..Windows always give me trouble.

Dostacos while that is true, you can indeed call anything a Bonneville car, I dont think one would fit here unless it also ran on a closed dirt track. Even with that rule most anything is game because of street stocks and such. Like the guy who borrowed Dads family car, whitewashed a number on it, and raced it ( without the knowledge of it being raced ) at the local track

Happened to be browsing over here , checking out the hot rods . Came across your thread Randy. 

What kind of time frame were you thinking of? I've got an old Chevell (72 ,I think) parts box build I started about the time of Scale Auto's 20th anniversary issue. Gives you an idea how long this ones been on the shelf . Building it as one might build the real local bull ring Saturday night special in the shade of his own backyard .

Definitely interested. My favorite racing . The dirt , bullring stuff.

Daddy1 for a time frame I was thinking a year because of the scratch building some would be doing, and you know I like long ones anyways. I am after all a slow builder ya know. I truely would love to see what you come up with on the 72 Chevell, especially after the air racers you have done.

Know all about the slow builder problem , me too. Often due to AMS ( Advanced Modeler Syndrome). It's in the glossary of terms on this website. Still, count me in . 

Haven't built a car in a few years, would be an interesting change of pace. Here are some pics of my parts box Chevelle.

 It started as a built up given to me some years ago by a coworker who occasionally dabbled in the hobby . It's an old AMT kit that I took apart to build more to my standards. 

 Also being kit bashed with an old AMT NASCAR racer for the front and rear clips, floor pan , roll cage, and maybe the basic engine block. Wheels tires and everything else is will be parts box or scratch built. 

First two pics show a mock up assembly , the third pic shows where it actually is as far as progress. Still lots of work to be done.  Note the tray of possible parts.

If you don't think this is too far along , by all means, count me in . Would be cool to add this to the Daddy1 racing stables.LOL

Howard would LOVE to have " DADDY1 RACING" join this group ! Knowing how you build this model is only 15 or 20 percent finished anyways so no problems with it being too far along. I am thinking I will call this group a go and will post a thread in the GB section on December first to get things rolling.

Just a warning for you oval track fans.  The Revell midget kit is not selling well, and is likely to go out of production soon.  Yet this is a great kit- the detail is fantastic. If you haven't tried one yet, you might want to hurry.

if they were the modern midgets i would probably get a few of them, i like being able to put the flashy modern paint schemes on things.

Don't know why one couldn't put a flashy modern paint job on a vintage midget. Would look kinda cool me thinks.

The Kurtis Kraft ran from 1946 until the sixties.  Some did have pretty fancy paint jobs, but not as much advertising as you see now.  Flames were pretty common in the KK era, and some sponsor logos- just not as much or as big as seen today.

BTW, I'd like to know if anyone does make a kit of a contemporary midget.

One other thing.  There is that police car version of a T that includes a Fronty engine as an option. I am planning to use that Fronty and the T frame to make a thirties vintage dirt car, but need wire wheels.  These need to be narrow wheels/tires, say 4 1/2 or 5 inch, not wide ones.  Anyone know of a source of wire wheels like that- say 16 or 17 x 5?
