I've had good success using "Westley's Bleach White" tire cleaner. Pour some in a container deep enough to submerge your part(s) in & let soak overnight. Wash parts off w/ clean water, & scrub any chrome left gently w old tooth brush while rinsing. Works for me every time.  Make sure you wear rubber gloves while handling this stuff though, it can be tough on skin if left in contact for prolonged periods. A respirator isn't  a bad idea either if working w/ this stuff in confined area.

Ditto on the Clorox Bleach. Fill a small mason jar with enough to cover the plastic parts and let sit overnight. Remove the next day and scrub with mild dish soap and an old toothbrush. Been doing it for years and it works fine. The Clorox can be used over and over again.

I've had pretty good luck just priming and painting these parts without stripping the chrome.  Use a toothy primer like Krylon or an automotive primer.

I've had good luck with good ol' Chlorox laundry bleach.  Just let the parts soak in straight bleach for a couple or three days.  It will magically dissolve away.

Careful with that Wesley's tire stuff.   It will peel your skin off!

Easy Off oven cleaner, the lye formula version (they have a "newer" version the also sell without lye, but the original is always sold next to it.). Strips plastic of chrome in just a couple of minutes. Another plus with this is that it will also strip enamel paint off of plastic quickly without harming the plastic. Also strips clear lacquer but if the lacquer is in colors it takes a little longer.

i used the bleach method just the other night on my Revell DTM Mercedes. took only an hour to get the plating off, however it did look like there was a gloss coat over the parts once i pulled the parts out and let them dry after rinsing.
