Car detailing questions!
Posted by theEBR on Thursday, March 29, 2012 6:30 PM

Hello fellow plastic addicts,

I am very new to car modeling and not now but later on will want to detail my cars. I would want to use things like engines, engine wires, tires, and custom decals. For the engines I have seen I company called Ross Gibson Engines and the products look really nice. But what scale are they in because I could not see it anywhere? Have you used these before and are they nice quality? Where is the best place to get them? For the engine wires, tires, and custom decals I have absolutley no clue at all!!!

Please, advice is so greatly appreciated! Respond soon!

most of gibson engines are 1/25 scale. There's an article on using them in this month's Scale Auto magazine.

you can buy wires and stuff for engines from hobby shops and railway modelling depts, but you could just find some old unused electrical equipment and pull them apart for their goodies. raid any old VCRs and stuff before you bin them.

I got a scrap piece of CAT5 Ethernet cable. If you strip it apart there's a lot of smaller wires.

A company called Detail Master has a lot of accessories.  I think they have two complete engines, and lots and lots of engine accessories, as well as racing wheels and trim accessories.

Best bet for you is to buy a copy of either Car Modeler, or Scale Auto Enthusiast and either visit the web sites of ads or write for catalogs.

Best source for wires are old cables from lamps, appliances, electronics etc. Items like radios, vcrs, and computers have a ton of small parts you can use to create engine details. I go thru them and remove what I need before tossing them in the trash. For example, the last old computer I took apart had a ton of hair thin copper wiring. I use this method on armor and aircraft for super detailing interiors and engine compartments.

For engine wiring as others have stated take a look at any discarded electrical wiring from computer equipment, small appliances etc. Often there is something that can work well if you strip the outer jacket off of the cable. Another good source is your local craft store, the beading hobby has several different sizes of coated and bare wire that works very well for model detailing. Good luck and enjoy building your cars!
