Posted by zokissima on Thursday, February 12, 2004 10:11 AM
K, I posted this on the scaleautomag forum as well, but I thought that ppl here might b more helpful.
In any case, I'm curious whether any manufacturer has ever made a McLaren roadcar kit? I'm DESPERATE to find one, so any liks/info would be helpful.
Thx!

I did a search on every search engine known to man. I could only find the race cars like F1. It may be possible to downgrade the racers to road legal. Sorry zokissima.
Aerodynamics is for people who can't build engines.

Yes there were 1/43rd scale kits of the F1GT in road and race trim, including the original road car that Bruce Mclaren built himself and used as personal transport. I know of none in larger scales. Try www.grandprixmodels.com and search their catelogue, I would think any kits are now out of production.

I'm assuming you mean the McLaren F1 road car, circa 1998?

There's never been a plastic kit of this car. A few cast-resin kits of the GTR cars have been produced, I believe, but they were very expensive and I don't believe any are still in production.

I'm surprised Tamiya never kitted this one -- it's a really interesting car, and it seems like it'd be right up their alley (no pun intended).

Hope this helps,

Yes, the F1 road car.
Thanks for all the posts. I was afraid that there was never a kit manufactured. And I completely hear you on the Tamiya front. I thought for sure they would have made one. Alas, no such luck. I'm sure the kit would have done well. I'm tired of building ferarris. I want some other super/sport cars to build.

I'm sure this note is a couple years late, but here goes.

I have also been searching for the McLaren F1 GTR. I even stopped by the dealership in London to enquire. No luck. After a while, I did come by one (just ONE) manufacturer of a kit in 1/24 scale. It was put out (in resin) by the Japanese company Studio 27 ( http://www.kiwi-us.com/~studio27/e/index2.htm )

Now, unfortunately, I made another recent trip to their website, and it appears the McLaren is not on the list. So, you may have to do some searching in a warehouse or eBay or whatever. Let me know if you come across something, as I'd be interested myself in picking one up.

Accurate Miniatures made a Mclaren of some kind but its been several years ago. I can't remember what model it was but I had two of them. Started one didn't like it, threw it away and sold the other on E-bay

I think it's their whole contract thing with mclaren that messed everything up, hence all their mclaren Formula1 kits went out of production right away as well, even the newer MP4/13 kits.  Good thing I managed to stock myself 3 of each kits and 2 of the 1/12 MP4/6...reason being i grew up watching senna and all.  =P

As for the F1, i remember seeing the studio27 kits as well in 1/24, but never any plastic kits.

No, there's never been a kit of the McLaren F1 road car made - unfortunately. Studio 27, & I believe Le Mans Miniatures, are the only companies to do ltd rel resins of the long & short tailed versions. Otherwise McLaren Cars International & BMW wanted far too much money in royalties. I don't think Gordon Murray was ever too pleased with even seasoned journos test driving it. I still have a mag packed away somewhere, that has an article on Jonathon Palmer's blat in it. The one bit I remember was Jonathon's comment: 'Faster than a real F1 in just about every gear', or words to that effect.

The kit you're referring to billbirk, is the CanAm M8, & it's successors. Bruce & Denny basically ran riot through the CanAm series back in the early 70's in those things.

Profil 24 did two versions, both resin.    Studio27 a number of different versions and Renaissance did a super kit.
GP Models have some Studio27 in stock but others to order only (4to6 weeks) - £84 for Profil24 and £105 for the Studio27 - that will give the credit card a beating !!!

What we REALLY want is a super detailed 1/12 kit!   I'll have to speak nicely to Ron Dennis next time I see him (only kidding - I should be so lucky!).
