The beauty of car modeling is that you're in essence building something that you wish was in your driveway.

 That's a real good point Glenn.  I never really thought about it, but in a sense I'm replicating my own version of  something like Jay Leno's garage in 1/25th scale.

When you guys build older cars/trucks, do you prefer to represent a vehicle that is factory new, one that has been restored (maybe not quite original in every aspect), or customized (non factory colors, and/or parts).

Yes.  (that is, all of the above- depends on kit and my intentions)

The beauty of car modeling is that you're in essence building something that you wish was in your driveway. I don't attempt trying to replicate factory stock(too much research drives you mad!), but I do like the overspray technique on the chassis; it gives it some pop over the plain black.

It seems to me that factory new is quite difficult to do sometimes. Often the model kits are incorrect, with components such as wheels, interiors, and engines that weren't correct for a particular style and year. Finding accurate color references can be difficult too.  Then there is the whole factory over spray craziness.  If you can get it all right, you can be proud of quite an accomplishment, if it doesn't drive you nuts first. 

A restoration could explain some incorrect colors and/or components. It might be possible that the correct parts were no longer available, or that the restorer used some artistic licence with component colors.  Or maybe during a restore, it was decided to combine some factory options that weren't allowed during the vehicles initial assembly.

To me custom can be the most fun.  You can go with a period correct vintage custom if you like the history and research, or you can go completely artistic and put together something very original just making it up as you go along. The latter can be a real ball if you have a well stocked spare parts bin.
