Paint and detail work should be easy for the Charger (Flat Black int./ext.).

Just so you get things right, the charger is gloss black exterior (flat black if you are doing chargers from Blade or Fast 5.)

Sounds like the pair would make a good diorama.

Project update: Have all the paints and tools ready to go, still debating if I want to get the paint from one of the online purveyors or if I want to do a BRG/Flt. Black mix.

Happy Modeling!

You may also want to check out Scale Finishes, they sell highland green for both the 1968 version and the 2008 version b=plus the low gloss black fo rthe hood and clear coats at reasonable prices.

Added note: The small rear bumper extensions on each side of the rear license plate were also painted Highland Green. Also note that the Charger had 5 hubcaps, LOL. That is the number of hub caps lost during the chase in the movie.

There are smaller bottles of brush touchup available at an auto parts store that can be airbrushed as well. Yeah, not uber cheap but neither are model paints anymore.

Go to Model Car World Automotive Finishes web site, Ford, 1968 #6834 Highland Green Met. The 2008 Highland Green Met. is a base coat/clear coat application and would have to be done this way to achieve the same color hue. The model paint IS the correct color and made for plastic. Modern base coat/clear coat can be harmful to your health and is NOT intended for plastic. Added notes: there is a difinative book out on the subject Mustang and I cannot recal the author at the moment. A google search may get you there. The Mustang used in the film (more than one) had all of the M-U-S-T-A-N-G letters on the trunk lid removed and the holes filled in. The drivers side door mirror was painted Highland green met. as was the chrome piece on the rocker panel below the door. The grill was used but the "Horse" was removed and I think the GT lights. As I recall the grill was plane black, so whatever was there was removed. There were several engine modifications and the shifter was a Hurst Competition shifter. The interior was stock black interior. The Charger was stock gloss black, not flat black. The Charger interior was also a stock black Charger interior. IIR correctly the shifter in the Charger was a stock Dodge shifter.IIR the Charger had a black vynle roof. The Mustang had "TorqueThruster" American Mag wheels with charcole black spokes and IIR they were polished aluminum and not chromed. Hope this helps.

The problem there is paying Mucho Denaro for an ounce of paint. Maybe if don buys a gallon, i'd buy 2OZ. Sure there are others, who would buy the rest. ( As long as he can sit on it for a few years:)

If you're not opposed to using spray cans, you should check an auto parts store (or Ford dealership) for touch up paint for the recent (last few years) Bullitt edition Mustang.  Probably use the same brand primer.  And test on some old plastic first.....just to make sure that there are no "surprises".

That's the reason I haven't built my kit of it. Can't find the right shade of green, but believe it was a metalic color.

Greetings all.

I have recently gotten back into model building after a 13 year or so hiatus and am planning on a rather ambitious project. I am planning on building both cars that were involved in the iconic chase scene from "Bullitt" as well as building a display scene that shows one of the segments of the chase as well. Fortunately, I am from and still live in San Francisco (that's right, Native San Franciscans still exist and live here) so getting to the locations for reference photos of the buildings and streets will be a bit easier for me rather than having to rely on what's on film.

For the cars, I plan on using the Revell-Monogram 1:25 scale "2 'n 1" kits for the '68 Mustang GT Fastback and the ' 68 Dodge Charger and building them as they come directly out of the box.

Paint and detail work should be easy for the Charger (Flat Black int./ext.). Detail work on the Mustang should be easy as well (use the film as reference for interior colors,) not using the grille on the front of the car, not applying the GT Badges, etc. However, I find myself running into a bit of difficultly when it comes to the painting of the Mustang.

I know that the the official name of the color of the Mustang is Highland Green, but I have not been able to find any business that sells this color specifically. Instead, I have found a handful of shades of Green that look similar to Ford's Highland Green. These colors are:

British Green (Tamiya TS 9 Spray)

Racing Green (Tamiya TS 43 Spray)

Deep Green (Tamiya XF 26)

Dark Green (Tamiya XF 73--JGSDF)

Dark Green (Tamiya XF 81)

Dark Green 2 (Tamiya XF 70)

JN Green (Tamiya XF 11)

JA Green (Tamiya XF 13)

Black Green (Tamiya XF 27)

NATO Green (Tamiya XF 67)

If anyone has done a similar build/project, what would be an acceptable substitute for Highland Green? Either in the form of an individual color or a mix of colors? Does anyone know of any business that sells Highland Green specifically for plastic models?

Also, are there any other details that I should be aware of or may have over-looked in my research for this project for the Mustang and/or the Charger?

Thanks for the help, everyone! Once I figure out the paint problem, I'll start to post up pictures of the build on the cars.

Happy Modeling!
