Hi guys,
I usually build model airplanes but I wanted to build something special for my fiance. She loves cars and the automotive business as her father used to own a dealership. She is currently the sales manager at a volkswagen store here and I would really like to build her something she can keep on her desk or in the office and I was just looking for some input on what are some of the best places to find Volkswagen models out there. Thank you for any help in advance.

I recently got a nice REVELL1960's version Volkswagen off of ebay a couple of weeks ago. You can find some nice deals on models there.

Maybe someone else will chime in but IIRC Hasegawa made very nice models recently of a sixties Beetle and Bus in 1/25th. IMHO you can't go wrong with a 'classic VW' for her. I'm currently sharing a WIP thread using an older Revell Convertible Bug but I'd have gladly started off with one of those newer and what appeared to be better, Hasegawa Offerings.

Way back when I built a few Hasegawa Porsches only to later find em boxed as Revell? Same kits, much less expensive! I wonder if that happened with the Samba already? I'd like one!
If you are interested in the "new" beetle, not the newest but the first new one, Tamiya makes a nice curb-side. Revell-Germany also has one that's a police model but I think it can be built as the civilian version.

Revell-Germany's Polizei Beetle can be built into a regular Beetle. It is molded in white and just includes the light bar assembly to glue to the roof. The light bar is just 7 pieces and requires you to file the bottom side to make it conform to the roof, so it was probably designed for another kit. It comes with "fictive" (their word) markings for the Frankfurt Polizei.
I've also got a Polar Lights Herbie the Love Bug. While it is a snap kit, it is very high quality and again can be built as a regular VW with a canvas sun roof. Being a snap kit, it may be better suited to being displayed on a desk at work. Those type of kits often get handled by people unaware that they shouldn't touch a scale model so roughly. It is a better kit than a Revell '60s Beetle with Love & flowers decals I also own.
Another kit I "lucked" into is the 1963 VW Type 2 '23-window' micro bus by Hasegawa (kit HC-10). I had won a Star Wars Snow Speeder by Fine Molds and the seller in China sent me the bus by accident. He sent me the right kit but told me to hang onto the bus until he had another buyer for it. That was 5 years ago.
One of my personal favorites is the AMT 1978 VW Rabbit (my first new car was an 84 Rabbit).
If you want to stay to an aircraft scale, Tamiya does a 1/48 scale Type 82 VW staff car as part of their armor line.
Here's the best VW, imo.
