Italeri Land Rover conversion
Posted by Maxx02 on Monday, March 11, 2013 5:13 AM

I want to convert an 1/35 Italeri Landrover Series 3 into a Series 2 like the Australian Army used in Vietnam.   The main difference is that the Series 3 headlights are on the fender and the Series 2 has them more inboard astride the radiator.   Can anybody suggest how I can change this please?

When a vehicle has such flat panels as you've shown there- it's easy to start with styrene sheets. I'm not familiar with your goal but maybe the radiator details can be transferred over as well? Good luck.

I'm going to create a diorama of a scene from my time in Vietnam.   I have now thought of a work around that doesn't involve exposing the front of the vehicle.   We were out in the scrub when we lost our Land Rover down into a VC tunnel complex.   The nose dived into the ground with its *** sticking out.   Fortunately we had M113 support who pulled us out.   Should make an interesting diorama don't you think?   That time was certainly interesting.

I think either of the Tamiya Ambulance or Pink Panther front ends would suit, Google for images thereof if you  don't want to do a chop-job, (although a series 3 (Ital) front on a Pinkie or meat-wagon is also possible...)

i'd fill in the existing headlights and drill some new ones in the grille area. (the grille area might need to be reworked a lot, so maybe smooth it out too).

Filling in the wing headlights was the easy part.   Creating the radiator grill around the new headlights has me beat right now.   Grimmo has kindly offered me a series 2A front from another kit.   That should solve the problem completely (I hope).

If it's a IIa front end,  then the lights will be in the outer wings as per the SIII, but it will have the SII  flat metal grill.

Rumour has it L-R sales dropped off in Australia with the switch from the metal II/IIa grills to the plastic grill on the SIII, as you could no longer use it for impromptu BBQ's!
