Thanks, I always grab a kit if I see it on sale. I know that Walmart's regular price for basic car kits is $20.
OctaneOrange revell (or is it round 2) are looking at releasing a set of pine wood derby cars. might be a good compromise. That or RC cars....

Revell released several Pine Wood derby car kits. In addition to the plain blocks and wedges, they've released car warp decals (big water slide transfer you can wrap around the block of wood). From memory, they did a Batmobile, Scooby Doo car and a monster truck with both monster wheels and BSA compliant wheels. We originally bought the Superman wrap to add to the doorstop wedge body, but it looked to plain to compete. We bought another body and used a kit.
Revell's pinewood car stuff is leaps and bounds beyond the plain block of wood I got as a kid. And they still sell the plain block and the doorstop wedge.
For next year, I bought one of the more elaborate aerodynamic pre-cut bodies. Those looked really cool and have three holes drilled into the rear of the body (like giant exhaust pipe openings) that you can add rod-like weights to the car without effecting the aerodynamics of the car. Each rod of weights is shaped like a stack of lifesavers so you can snap off as much as you need to get the car to 5 ounces. The pre-cut body was only $3.50 on clearance.

I've been building a Mustang concept car by Revell for my 8 yr old. I'm trying to get him to do it with me just spraying the car body. It was also a clearance item kit. I think it's a Mustang III from 1996, but ours is a reissue from 2006.
This is the next step past the pine wood derby car we built last month. He still likes to tear up toy cars across the carpet and it's hard to get him interested in a car that will just sit on his shelf.
Maybe you could build this....

always worth picking up a model or two on clearance.
Great score!
Now show us the build pics! (Snicker)
Great Walmart clearance aisle find yesterday was a Revell California Ferrari open top kit for $5. The still sealed kit has four clearance stickers on it with only the previous $11 price being visible. I'm not normally a car modeler, but most of their car kits are just under the $20 mark.
It looks to have a complete engine & drive train and the box top says the front axle is positionable.
