Top coat for Grand Prix cars
Posted by Chrisk-k on Sunday, August 31, 2014 4:17 PM

After building and painting military vehicles exclusively, I'm venturing into car modeling - specifically Grand Prix racers.

Is the body of a Grand Prix racer glossy or satin?  I've watched several videos and looked at photos, but I couldn't decide whether to use a glossy top coat or a satin one.

Between glossy and super glossy! ;) Which car(s) are you interested in Chrisk-k?

I'm interested in A LOT.  Every Tamiya 1/20 Grand Prix car looks awesome.  I'm building an MP4/13 and have a Ferrari F310 and a Lotus 997.  Building cars is very different from building tanks, and I'm loving it.

Glossy.  But then, there are degrees of gloss.  The older cars, fifties, sixties- were glossy but not overcoated.  That is, they did not have the super wet look.  The modern cars DO have a super gloss.  Same thing with domestic racing cars.

The latest-and-greatest finish is a low-gloss finish that's starting to appear on some professional race cars.  It's not terribly common, but they are starting to make an appearance.  Otherwise, as others have said, gloss finish.

I'd like to make them look like they are brand new.  Having weathered my armor models to make them look like WWII vetarans, I'd love to build shiny models!
