Tamiya 1967 1/12th Lotus 49
Posted by Wilbur Wright on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 4:30 PM

Hi Guys,  I haven't been around much in the last couple of years because of business and traveling and life.  I'm committed to finishing several builds that have been lingering for at least a couple of years. This model is Tamiya's terrific Lotus 49 w the photo-etched parts. Funny enough I didn't use the P/E turned aluminum funnels provided because the styrene looked more realistic in that case.

The yellow decals were brittle and could not work on the nose cowell. That HAS to be painted to look right and I used Humbrol flat yellow for that. That was painted over Tamiya bottled Green x-5 airbrushed on for the body then Testor MM gloss coat lacquer, then white circle and number decals, then another gloss coat.

The suspension on this model is extremely delicate. several of the small chrome styrene connections broke and I am a very experienced modeler. I can't see how this kit ever came with an electric motor. Other than that I am pleased with it.

Very nice!  That was a popular release, and I still see folks finding one of those somewhere and building it into a great model.

Thanks Guys, And yes Don this kit is still around.

The decals in the kit were tagged 2014 so apparently they had a production run somewhat recently. I got this kit from an Ebay shop in Hong Kong.  Took about 7 days to get to me which I thought was quick.

I've seen it recently in some US online shops.

This kit is a good entry point to 1/12th F1 as it's not that complicated. I have the Tamiya 1/12 Ferrari 312T which is a much more complicated car to get right.  That one scares me.

Some of the modeler's that I've seen that specialize in F1 are the most skilled modellers I've ever seen.
