Question on sheet metal
Posted by Ozmac on Thursday, June 4, 2015 2:32 AM

Hi all

I'm working on a car diorama in 1/43 scale, creating a replica of a famous old rally held here in Australia in the 1950s. I'm planning on doing a series of postings on how the build is going once I actually start building, but I'm just planning right now.

My question on sheet metal is this. While I am building one of the cars for the dio in 1/43 from a plastic kit, for another of the cars I am modding a diecast model in 1/43.

To look like the real thing from 1953, it needs a sun visor over the top of the windscreen. So, I thought if I bought some metal sheet, cut it to size and bent it carefully in the right places, it could do the job. So, what metal sheet type (brass/aluminum/tin) works best for this kind of scratch-build, and what metal sheet thickness would look right in 1/43 scale?

Here's the car I plan to add the visor to: it's a Holden 48/215, otherwise called the "FX".

Any suggestions will be very welcome!

I find soft aluminum easier to form. It is hard to find really soft brass.  I bought the smallest roll of roof flashing aluminum I could find at a home improvement store.  It may be a lifetime supply, was cheap, about seven bucks for the roll, and is just the right thickness and softness for this kind of work.  Buy the bare stuff if possible, without a vinyl skin or adhesive.

K&S brass is tempered. It can be used but needs to be annealed with a flame.

Brass might be a little harder to work than alum., and hold shape better as you work it,  but on the other hand an alum soda or beverage can might be just the ticket.  Bonus----you get the contents........

Thanks for your suggestions, gentlemen. I think I might just start off with the low-budget aluminum can and see how that goes. Hadn't thought of that, which is why it's so good to ask others!
