Tamiya 1/24 Nissan R390 GT1 Finished.

good job ,  i think it came out really good.  i learned something from your post as well as far as how to layer paint.  

i've had a ferrari f1 2001 in the closet for about 10 years or so along with the williams f1 kit.  i don't have the skills yet to build them the way i want to,  gotta practice some more. 

Thanks Looper. Looking back if I could redo something, I would have hand painted the engine compartment. Airbrushing all that took forever. The kit also came with pre-cut masks for the windshield's, the instructions had me place the masks on the inside, by doing that it give a nice smooth gloss finish.

I plan to do some testing with paint on a $20.00 revell car kit, in preparation for my next build the Ferrari F2001. First with using Model Master enamel white primer #2748 as a base for Tamiya TS-49 Bright Red, the primer is semi-gloss so I could think I would not have to apply a gloss white over the primer. The Bright Red should look nice and bright, in a total of two light coats.

Came across a video on youtube showing how a modeler built the Ferrari F2001 kit, it's in Japaneses but it shows how to assembly some of the tricky parts, and even airbrushing on carbon fiber on the suspension. Title of the video is, Plamo Tsukurou 1x11 Tamiya Ferrari F2001 enhanced.

do you have any close ups of the engine? 

i just watched that video, thanks for the heads up.  do you know what compounds he used to shine up the nose?

First up is pictures of the F1 car.

Here you can see the major sections.

Taking a note from armor building, I use masking tape rolled up to stick the bottom to the Tamiya jar, for easy holding for airbrushing.

 One coat of Model Master Acryl white primer #4622.

 One coat of Tamiya TS-49 Bright Red.

 For what ever reason, I airbrushed on X-7 Red.

To make painting easier, in getting into hard to reach places I disassembled the front and rear wings. 

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of the decals, most of them went on with little to no trouble. The big white decals you have to be careful with, they tear very easy. The reason why I don't have the car model any more is that when handling it, I dropped it on the work bench and the suspension shattered into pieces. Was going to rebuild it but that would have been a lot of work, so I decided just to get another one.

In the youtube video I'm guessing he's using a automotive product. That's another thing I'm going to test out on some scrap, using a automotive product to get more of a shine. 

I'll post photo's of the Nissan GT engine later today.

Here's some work in progress photo's of the Nissan R390.

Tamiya's pre-cut masks fit the clear parts perfect.

Engine base and rear suspension.

Three coats of Model Master enamel gloss black spray.

Tamiya tape was used to mask for TS-49 Bright Red, this is where I should have airbrushed on gloss white to use as a base for Bright Red.

After about four coats of TS-49. Using 2000 grit sand paper I sanding down the edge line created by the tape.

Fully assembled engine and rear suspension.

Thanks Looper, my pleasure.  Yeah I didn't like having to throw the Ferrari away. I learned a few things from it and should make my next one even better. I would say the Nissan R390 was a easier build.
