modelcarguy is right, Castrol Super Clean does an awesome job at removing chrome plating. I have been rather happy with the results!

I use Castrol Super Clean. It will remove the Chrome and protective clear coat underneath in 24 hours.

DO NOT USE NAIL POLISH REMOVER!!!!!! I did it once on a chrome plated sprue of parts, and it ate away the plastic!!! Everything above seems to work very well. I use Bleach personally, and it works like a charm for me. And it's safe on the plastic.

I use Simple Green, a couple of days of soaking and all 3 layers are off. It's a great paint as well.

My experiences with Formula 409 range from 15 minutes to 2 days. There is a clear coat that protects the plating that needs to be scrubbed. If you use the search the forums feature, you should find another thread that had lots of different ways to remove the chrome. What ever method you use, wear gloves to protect your hands. Formula 409 will leech the oils out of your skin and cause the skin to split.

My favorite method for removing chrome is Comet cleaner. Just add water to make a slightly runny paste, then slather it onto your parts. Let it sit for a while, then scrub it with a toothbrush. Rinse it off with water and you'll have a de-chromed part that's clean and ready for paint.

I use 409 exclusively. Its very mild so I don't have to worry about fishing around for parts. Most of the time, it takes about an hour to get the stuff off...but that all depends on the brand of model, and how deep the chrome is.

But I'm telling you...409 is where its at.

Place the parts in bleach for a night. That will do the trick.

Removing Chrome coating...

Is there a way to remove the factory kit chrome plateing? I want to say that awhile ago I read somewhere that nail polish remover will take it off the plastic, but I cant find where I read it.
Any information or help would be great and thanks in advance :)
