Updated NSX Pics
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, March 21, 2004 9:21 PM
She's getting there. I've been having major troubles with the decals wrinkling, and bubbling up.....especially around the fenders....and it seems that in certain spots where I have applied micro-sol the decals have actually bubbled up...it just looks weird. Oh and of course on the hood in front of the windshield two of the decals didn't match up. I have a spare decal sheet, so I'm just going to have to graff on a piece to match it up. If anyone has any onther ideas on how to fix the decals, please let me know ASAP!!!!

Looks great Heath. Sorry about the decals not cooperating though. Don't have any tips there, still learning myself with cars.

That's why I build a "dirty" Aircraft while I'm building a car, the pristine condition gets old!! LOL I think my heartrate goes up everytime I spot a piece of hair in the finish!!! I prefer flats to gloss anyday!!!

I wasnt planning on it, but aftre some thought I may end up going after all. If i do, I wont be entering the competition. seeing as im a beginner and all I think the competition would be too tough for me, but I think it would deffinately help improve my skills. Not too mention I havent actually finished a model, got a few in various states of completion. What is the exact date of the event?

April 16th, and 17th. It should be pretty fun, it will be my first comp, and first completed model also. I just figured that you never know (or learn) unless you try!! Besides, it gives me some motivation when I have a deadline!!! Otherwise, it would just sit on my bench for months while I keep buying and starting more!! LOL

Your car looks good. I have bought 3 of those kits trying to get one that looks decent.
By the way, TamiyaCon is on the 17th and 18th.

Thanks for the correction!!! And thank you all for the compliments!! The decals are still being touchy, but I have realized (though maybe a bit too late) that the micro-sol is kinda bubbling the decals up. So I've been using just the Micro-Set for the later decals, and everything is working great so far. Hopefully I'll be able to get the other ones to snuggle down, but if they don't do it in time, I'm just gonna have to clear coat and go with it. FreedomEagle, I'm jealous, I've never seen a 1/1 version in real life!! I've heard that a few 1/1 vehicles show up for the TamiyaCon, so I'm anxious to see if that's true!! Either way, I'll be taking lots of pics!!

...and here is the rest of the messagesBlush [:I]
I'm currenlty building the same NSX and I didn't have any major problems with the decals. If there is a need for touch up's I recommend the above mentioned Tamiya colour, as it's almost a perfect match to the blue decals. I have put on several coats of clear and is now trying to sand and polish it out. Maybe I will post some pics if it turns out ok. I have som other stuff if you are interested on this adress. http://niclasproos.fotopic.net

Good Luck and happy modeling!

Thanks for the infor Niclas, I got the X-3 and have been using it as touch-up. the biggest problems I've been having is wrinkling decals, but I figured out that the problem is that the decals are having a bad effect to Micro Sol. As long as I don't mess with them, they seem to lay down perfectly. Great photos on your site!!! How many clear coats do you put on before you polish??

Thank's for the kind words!

I must say that it differs from time to time how many layers of clear I put on my cars. On the Fiat 500 it's only two layers and on the other side of the scale is my DTM Mercedes that has some fourty layers of clear, with additional sanding between the painting sessions. After polishing I'm currently using Tamiya's Model Wax as a final treatment. On the Mugen NSX I did put on a whole jar of Modelmasters metalizer sealer in one session, so by now it's probably two jars on that body Big Smile [:D] I have put out some pictures of it among the others. By the way as I'm no masterhacker on HTML-code I couldn't figure out how to post pictures directly in the message. Can you please tell me how? After reading the help section on the forum I realised that it didn't help at all. I studied the code on your post but I didn't get any wiser Blindfold [X-)] Tried to copy it but I couldn't see any pictures when I prewied my own post!?
Anyway, here is a link instead. http://niclasproos.fotopic.net/c147251_1.html
I took a glance at your site and was thrilled to see a Hind in progress Wow!! [wow]Thumbs Up [tup] how is it? Worth spending your hard earned bucks on? Dumb question as you obviously already has done that Big Smile [:D] I'll be checking in to see the progress on that baby.

Have a nice day!

WOW!!! Glad I'm not going up against you!!! Your version is 10 times better than mine!!! I'll use your rim as an example of posting pics. You did a wonderful job on the rim, as I didn't even paint the wheel nuts like you did. Any ways..... open your image on the site. Then I right click, select properties, highlight the URL, and then copy. Next when you're ready to post the pic here, you insert the URL between: [ img ] and [ /img]. So you'll paste the URL that you copied in between them, remove any spaces (If I was to remove the spaces right now, there would be a red X) Let's give it a shot with your rim:

Some sites don't allow you to share pics, and I think that you're site might be one of them. Sorry about that.
As for the Hind, I'm loving it!!! It's so huge!!! LOL I haven't been able to do anything the last couple of days, but I plan on trying to start out on the panels this weekend. Including putting a map of my city on the Moving map screen!!! Thanks for the gloss tips, I'm gonna be starting that on monday after I wrap up my touch-ups!!

Micro sol and Micro set are too different products for 2 different things, although they work together. If I have it right apply a little Microsol to the body work where you going to place the decal, this will then make the water on the decal dissapate quicker. Once the decal is in place then apply the Microset, it is this which will get the decal to conform.

The other problem I have found very occassionally is that the Micro products are just too strong, and the decal starts to squanch up if this is the case then I apply only a little and then use a brush dipped in water to smooth everything down.

Still looks real sweet though.

Good luck at the comp.

Ok, my two cents worth :) .... i did the same kit, and i have problems with the decals reacting with the micro sol, but not the micro set. i would usuall apply a bit of micro set to the area the decal is going on to, an then use the microsol if the decal has to conform to a compound curve. but then i would leave the kit for a couple of days so teh decal could dry thoughly. worked 99% of the time.

looks fantastic though, good luck with the show

Yes, that's the right order to use Microscale's product's. If you read on the bottles you will see that normaly you use only Micro Set both before and after applying the decal. Only if there is a double curved surface you should use Micro sol to get the decal snuggle down nice and smooth. I had no major problems with the NSX, the only thing that happend was that it took a while before I started clearcoating and by that time some of them started to peel of in the edges. No big problem thou, it took a little clear to get them down and some touch ups in some areas. The main key is to not tamper with the decal after using Micro Sol as it most likely will ruin it.

I just got this kit today. Usually I only prime the body and the wing etccc, but never the enginge, suspension or any of the other smaller parts. Since alot of the parts are molded in black would it be best if I just primered everything.

Personally, I didn't. But I used enamel paint, not acrylic. I'm wondering if that would make a difference. Since most of the black parts are supposed to be flat or semi gloss black, I just figured that primer would be a waste. Like you, I generally just primer the body components. Just don't use Micro Sol!!!! Use only Micro Set!!! BTW Nice Beavis pic!!!

Ok cool, I didnt really want to doing any additional priming unless absolutely necessary. Im not positive, but I think in the case of using acrylic it would be better to have a primer coat. I think it would help to get better coverage, but I could be wrong. I use mostly enamels anyway. I will remember not to use microsol when I get to the decals, I havent had much luck with that stuff anyway. LOL...the Beavis picture I thought was hilarious, I guess they are putting that show back on TV sometime soon.

I got the kit at value craft, also went to Hobby People but I didnt end up getting anything there. They seem to be a little pricy with the Tamiya kits.

Yeah, the only good kit I found at Hobby People was the Tamiya Enzo Ferrari marked down to $28.00...it was some sort of sale. Where'd you grow up at? Are you from San Diego?

havent spent much time in Ramona...for obvious reasons. Its kind of similar to valley center. Hey I was just looking at a buildup of the NSX on some website. Unfortunately it was in japanese or something so I couldnt read what was being said. But it looked like the builder didnt even paint the body, just applied decals. Do the decals cover the body completely? I havent given it a serious look yet.
