Yes WillysMB your right, another term for the rich to carry the guests and their guns to the fields for the pheasant or duck 'shoots'. The servants or 'beaters' had to walk!

Yep, while the original purpose was fairly pedestrian, haul people and stuff,  by the late 30's they were more "second cars" to the rich and famous in the states too! something to run to the store in when you didn't want to take the Dusenberg. The wooden bodies pretty much went out of fashion in the 50's and prices on the used ones fell dramatically. One of the most expensive to buy currently is the 1947 Ford Sportsman, Edsel's brainchild, which didn't sell well then, but can run close to $200k now. Didn't the Brits call them "shooting breaks" as well?

Thanks for the info WillysMB. We had similar cars here in the UK after WW2, but as they were so expensive and a few had the woody appearance they were called Estate Cars. This was because the only people that could afford them lived on country estates with a Manor House, perhaps with a few thousand acres of grounds, including farms etc. and so many servants!

Coming along nicely. I actually have a '31 Ford Station Wagon, which is what these were called when new. Why, because they were primarily used to haul people from the train station to the hotels, hence the origin of the term. When the surf culture began after WWII, the old Fords were plentiful and cheap, nobody wanted the maintenance on the wooden bodies, so they were indeed the "Woody" of choice. Try to find a cheap one now...

Thanks Pawel, the wheels are from the kit although a bit wider the wire wheels suit the car.

Another of my ebay, part started 'Woody' selection. I've not been able to use the wing/fender running board piece in this build as it was badly distorted, the kit may have been stored somewhere warm as it was also very brittle. This may have been why the first owner was put off building it.

Anyway otherwise the build went well. I've added internal rear tubs to fill the gap and added woodgrain decal to those and the inside of the drop down tailgate. I also added alloy exhaust ends.

During my research I also noticed that folks carted their surfboards around in these as well...............
