Finished the 'tractor' for my previously-posted  'Beer and Baseball' trailer...the old 1980 Monogram "Snap-Tite" Chevy Bison. I'm not a 'truck guy' by any means, so Mono's old 1/32 "Snap-Tite" series of commercial trucks and trailers is just about my speed: reasonably good-looking on the shelf without being a major time commitment, and great fun as 'something different.'

I de-chromed most of the kit's extensive chrome sprue to take care of un-hideable assembly seams on the fuel tanks, and the extensive mold seams on pretty much everything else. There's no engine or 'innards'---no low-angle shots, since there's a lot of daylight showing through---and the provided interior is a single (nicely-molded) tub with everything but the separate steering wheel. I pretty much punted all the 'snap-tite' attachments in favor of real dependable glue.

Biggest bugaboo was a fairly badly-twisted main frame, which I thought I had taken care of with a hot water immersion and some judicious counter-twisting before assembly. All looked square and true until the cab was snapped and glued in place----at which time the 'twist' seemed to reappear in all its perverse glory. (If I hadn't already finished the trailer, that would probably have been 'it' for the ol' Bison, in the form of a sudden high-impact meeting with the nearest wall.) After a few minutes' reflection, I decided it would be easiest just to 'clip' the frame aft of the cab and re-attach it in a (more-or-less) 'straightened' position: everything was going to be painted black anyway, and I could (mostly) hide the seams under some 'faked' detail. I had already decided to fill in the big blank area behind the cab with a piece of Plastruct tread-plate, and to add a pedestal and 'pogo' for some electric-wire 'air lines,' so at least the 'splice' doesn't leap out.

Inspiration for the color scheme literally passed me on the interstate one day: simple, almost elegant, but with that little bit of 'flair.' The stripes were nearly an exact match for those on an old Testors 1/48 Lear Jet sheet I had squirreled away, which seemed like 'destiny.' I home-made some decals for all the pre-DOT state tax stickers and 'bingo'-style license plates, making sure everything matched my randomly-chosen 'moment in time' of 1993. Last was my made-up company logo for 'Diversified Commercial Transport'---can you get any more generic than that?

A little frustrating, but mostly fun. Hope the real 'truck guys' won't be too hard on me.

(BTW, I know the 'struts' are still down on the hooked-up trailer. The thing's two feet long, and I've only got display space to show them separately, so I left it that way.)

Now that is one awesome looking trailer! I hope that your tractor turns out as nicely.

Congrats to your Cubs on something they were long overdue to have again. Now if my Angels can get past choking in the playoffs...

Thanks, gents.

What do you seal your decals with?

I always use Testors Decal Bonder. Though it does tend to make the decals want to 'curl' a bit---usually only a problem on relatively small decals---it has proved far less prone to running or 'blushing' colors than any other I've tried, including Krylon, Dullcote, and Microscale decal film. (Still use the last for spot-applications and 'saving' old or cracked decals.)

That said, I've only used it with my HP printer and both OM and 'refill' inks---no idea of the results on other mfg's products. I know different brand inks can be 'touchy' or downright combative, at times.

Thanks for your interest.

Beautiful model, and congratulations on the Cubs winning the whole ball of snakes last fall!

Now wouldn't it be nice if my Los Angeles Dodgers would win a World Series!

Oh, those were the days. And let's not forget Jack Brickhouse.

Greg, that tractor trailer is extremely cool. Really nice work. YesYesYes

Thanks Chuck, Mississippivol and Mike!

mrmike

My sister is a Cubbies fan, lived in the northern suburbs until last year, so we celebrated the WS win for her. Now she's got a conflict - moved to Northern CA where the Giants are the center of attention.

I sympathize.

At least I had the good fortune to move to an Amercan League city; I can root for the Orioles with a completely clear conscience...since they and my Cubs rarely affect one anothers' destinies.

Thanks again for the positive input!

Just WOW! What a great job on the graphics; and yes, a lot of baseball gravitas goin' on. My sister is a Cubbies fan, lived in the northern suburbs until last year, so we celebrated the WS win for her. Now she's got a conflict - moved to Northern CA where the Giants are the center of attention. Awesome job on your trailer; looking forward to the tractor build!

Wow! That is fantastic, and I'm a Cards fan!  Congratulations, too, on the Cub's World Series win, that was fun to watch.

Beer and Baseball 1-32 SNAP-TITE Chevy Bison --FINISHED--
Posted by gregbale on Thursday, May 11, 2017 6:57 PM

I've been sitting on the nearly 40-year-old Monogram 'Snap-tite' Chevy Bison & trailer set for a decade or so, having picked it up on the well-known auction site. The 'Cracker Jack' markings---though undoubtedly nostalgic---didn't really do anything for me; I figured I'd eventually turn it into a beer truck.

This year, to salute the always-glorious return of baseball season...and as a well-earned nod to my beloved Cubs having actually won the World Series I was never quite sure I'd live long enough to see...I decided to go retro and commemorate not only the team of my mis-spent youth, but the beer advertising that was so omnipresent a part of that experience. I found a nice mural-like rendition of 'the Friendly Confines' online, comped up an ad campaign in the familiar spirit of those long-ago ones, and added some colorful graphics celebrating the Krausened glory of Chicagoland's long ago 'favorite' brew.

Trailer was built strictly out-of-box, with only a few dangling lines added beneath to lend a bit of 'real-life' look. The home-made decals were large, but surprisingly easy to deal with...though there were spots where they never quite laid down over the rivets on the trailer sides. (I was hesitant to try too much setting solution, since even well-sealed inkjet decal will only take so much wrangling before colors start to bleed and run.) It's 'close enough' for my purposes...and does make for a rather eye-catching display.

The Chevy Bison tractor is still in the building stages---but I wanted to get the trailer done before too much of the baseball season had passed, to celebrate the golden moment. Hope you enjoy the pics.
