'49 Talbot Lago GP Race Car model by Smer
Posted by BuildingCars4Fun on Thursday, February 22, 2018 1:05 AM

I completed the build on the 1949 Talbot Largo GP Race Car, pretty happy with the result, also my first attempt at weathering. I was going for the "post race"look.... thinking it's come up pretty decent actually.

Some comments on the model - Smer is not a brand I was familiar with, and not one I would rush to buy again. The whole model consists of around 30 parts (so super simple) though mostly it worked pretty well (Engine, body and interior all had decent detail).

The model was MASSIVELY let down by the wheels - the tires were molded plastic (not rubber) and the spokes were basically indents on clear plastic. Yes, I could have / should have made my own spokes, but... well I didn't My bad.

Here's the result, and some pics down below comparings this to the car that inspired it.

And compared with the (cleaner) original...

Hi - looks great, I've been wanting to get this one - Now I might! The kit has led a "chequered" life - been issued under various manufacturers/labels, and is now in the Heller Catalogue. Smer has also at some point reissued the Airfix veteran cars in 1/32nd scale.

There was also an Alfa Romeo single-seater from approximately the same era - but that Isn't on Heller's listings at present.

That is weird -other people seem to be able to se it. What browser are you using? Might also be that I am doing something wrong! I'm new to forums (and find them monumentally difficult to use)

Boy, what memories!  I remember building that kit in the early sixties!  Wheels were not great, but fit well with contempories.  Today we live in such a golden age of scale modeling!  I sometimes can't believe the amount of aftermarket!

Perhaps if we could persuade Eduard to do a PE set - look at the cockpit of the actual racer - sprung steering wheel, preselector quadrant, and much more ( not to mention those wire wheels...) !
