Bullitt 1968 Ford Mustang GT

Your story is great!  Coming home from a war zone alive is great and coming into an airport where they are filming a major motion picture is exciting!  Thank you for sharing your story! 

Here is the Bullitt Mustang I completed for my dad after he passed away. This was one of his favorite movies and he says he came home from Vietnam and through San Francisco air the day they were shooting the airport scene.

Thanks guys!  During my research on this car, I found two articles that chronicled the Bullitt Mustang.  One is in Road & Track and the other is in Car & Driver magazines and I highly recommend them for reading!  The "beauty" car that Steve McQueen drove was restored and repainted to stock configuration and sold to an Warner Bros. exec, then to a New Jersey Sheriff, and finally to its current owner in Tennessee.  The "jump" car was for the most part, destroyed during filming and was to have been crushed.  That car ended up in a Mexico scrap yard where it was found and it's being restored.  The car that Chad McQueen owns is a recreation of the Bullitt Mustang and NOT one of the original cars used in the movie.  Am I going to do the Charger?  No. I have several Chargers on the shelf including one that is under construction for the last several years.  That will not be a Bullitt Charger. As much as I love Chargers and other Mopars, my '68 Charger will be built based upon an ad I once saw and will be painted Tamiya Light Blue Metallic with either a white or blue interior and Cragar SS mags.

Mike this could be my favorite of your builds - but I'm a die hard Mustang fan.  Really nice.  Carb looks great.

Looks great. The Highland Green Metalic paint was a factory color for 1967 and 1968 on the Mustang and a few other models. There is a super book with every detail on the Movie Bullet Mustangs, for example the chrome mirror and the chrome strip bellow the doors were painted the body color so there would not be a light reflection into the cameras.

Sometime in the last couple of years one of the original Mustangs used in the Movie was found in TN (IIRC). I think Steve McQueen's son has one of the original movie Mustangs, but this may just be a rumer. Anyone know for sure?

I had a discussion with the Ford chemical engineer who had the task of making the "base coat -clear coat"  Highland Green metalic paint on the 2008 and later Bullit Mustangs match the Hue of the 1967/68 Mustangs Highland Green Metalic, which was an acrylic enamel. The new paint looks just like the original, a little more glossy, but the hue is spot on.

Again, you did a fantastic job on your Bullit Mustang. Are you going to do the Charger?
