1966 Barracuda AMT kit...anybody build it? Have it?
Posted by jhawk on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 12:22 PM

My very good friend passed away several years ago.  When we were in High School he had a 1966 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S that we both had a blast driving in.  I would like to build a model of that car.  The kits are rare and expensive.  Has anyone built the AMT kit of the 1966 Barracuda?  There are two kits on ebay but both are racing Barracuda's.  Does anyone know if those kits can be built into stock versions of the car?  I'm not interested in the racing versions.  Thanks in advance for any help.

I built the '66 Barracuda resin kit from MCW many years ago and used the chassis and engine from the AMT 1969 Plymouth Barracuda kit.  MCW doesn't carry the '66 Barracuda kit any more.  I don't know anything about the racing versions of the Barracuda so I can't say if they are worth the price of buillding.  The two I saw on ebay were priced at $295 and $180 respectively and I wouldn't bother purchasing them at those prices.  Here's my WIP on Scale Auto Forum from 2010.  The WIP photos are long gone since I closed my account with Photobucket.

Thanks for the quick reply.  You do great work too!  I enjoyed reading your thread even without the pics.  I don't want to spend mega bucks on a model kit, so I'll keep looking.  Too bad Plymouth only made that particular model for one year.

Actually, the first generation Barracuda was started in 1964.  I don't know if there may be other years model kits out there.  1964, 1965, and 1966.  Good luck on your search.

I cant say much about a model kit but wasnt the 66 just gorgeous. Was definitely my pick of the 'cudas.

Have you considered finding a diecast 1/24 or 1/18 and dismantling and repainting etc? Can repaint outside and trim. Replacement engines and wheels are available, you can do some pretty cool things.

Ive repainted a few 1/18 models for people now.

Jhawk,

The AMT kits were usually 2n1 meaning you could build either a stock version or a race/custom version with parts left over (Yayyy!!!). I just visited evilbay and found a couple of resin bodies (one looked really rough) and a couple of pull toys that you might be able to use for the bodies and interior with the AMT 69 kit providing the chassis and engine.  You can't get there with the Hemi Under Glass kit as it was a purpose built racecar and that is what the kit is.  I could have sworn that Monogram did a first gen Cuda back in the late 80's, early 90's when they came out with a boatload of muscle car kits, but there is no evidence of such a kit on the web.  Hope this helps.

Buddy- Those who say there are no stupid questions have never worked in customer service.

This is how i built mine. Hemi under glass and used a 69 interior, engine and chassis. The only issue is the rear arches are cut out for drag slicks. i'm going to go back on day and fix it.
