Regarding movie cars, here are my thoughts.
Two Thumbs Up:
1989 Batmobile - People love or hate this iteration of Batman's ride, but I thought it was the most bad a** Batmobile of all time. The long nose, low canopy and stout rear fins looked extremely sinister. Was it built on a Chevy Impala? The Chris Nolan Tumbler was cool from an engineering standpoint, but I hated the "loose roof shingle" aesthetics.
DeLorean DMC-12 - When "Back to the Future" hit the theaters in 1985 I thought I had died and gone to heaven. It was love at first sight when I saw a real one going up the street in 1982, and I could not believe my favorite car was going to star in a movie. That the movie was awesome was icing on the cake. My obsession over the car is despite knowing it's a boulevard cruiser with unreliable British electrics. What I'd do for an electric conversion by Tesla! 1.21 Gigawatts!!!
Lola T-70 - From "THX1138". I have no idea if the movie had an actual designation for this car, but the almost Back to the Future looking hardware stuck on top gave the lovely T-70 a brutal, super cool look. I find it amazing that the car had so many things that were to feature in future sci-fi cars.
Lotus Esprit Series I - The famous sub-car from "The Spy Who Loved Me". I had read that a guy from Lotus intentionally parked the prototype car outside the studio to try to get it into the movie during produciton. Apparently it worked, and I am glad for it. The chase scene leading up to the dive off the pier and sub transformation is one of my all-time favorites. Caroline Munro - nuff said!
Spinner - The flying police car from "Bladerunner" has become a sci-fi icon, and is one of my favorite fictional vehicles. It is so unique in styling that nothing before or since comes close. I think the prop was based on a VW chassis.
Two Thumbs Down:
Lawmaster - From "Dredd". What was that, a moped? Hardly fitting for the most feared Judge in Megacity One. The movie was a tremendous missed opportunity IMHO. Karl Urban nailed Dredd's character, and was hampered only by a lack of a true super nemesis and an apparently low budget for the background. What was that, Los Angeles? Megacity One is all about the vertical, and yet the movie version looked flat. Karl Urban should have requisitioned Stallone's Lawmaster and set budget. Such a crime.
Megaweapon - The super lame super dump truck that featured in the super stupid and lame "Warrior of the Lost World". Who'd be afraid of a black dump truck? If I found myself in this stinker of a movie, I'd have walked off the set and forgone my $5 a day stipend. The dumb talking motorcyle gets my hate as well.
Speeder from the Star Wars prequel - I can't be bothered to remember which movie it came from, but the speeder Anakin "borrows" looks like nothing more than a 1950's convertible hot rod, complete with blower and flame paint job. As Deapool would say "That's just lazy writing."
Okay, I'm trying to come up with stinker car #4 and #5 and can't recall any more, so I'll leave it at that.
