WHY ??
Posted by Tanker - Builder on Thursday, September 19, 2019 12:12 PM

You know;

I have thought about this for some time. Having seen some of the most beautiful and some of the ugliest cars That were built in this country and Abroad I wonder.

How does a car wind being a movie Star? You know which ones I mean. I know the ASTON said " Bond " all over it. Did the Alpine roadster really say Maxwell Smart? Or the Horror cars and trucks. Why pick on a poor Mack for instance? Or the Plymouth for Christine? Why couldn't she have been a 59 Cadillac Eldorado for instance?

The Batmobile? I will only say this.I saw this at an Auto Show when I was about to go in service. I thought it was the most Outrageously beautiful car out there. Why ruin an icon for T.V. Totally Tasteless! After all in her regular iteration she was the coolest car in a Movie I ever saw!

Now what I would like is your comments on which ones you would've used for whatever and which was the most Beautiful. I am Biased though. I still think the 53 Studebaker Starliner has that beauty today! my second choice is the 56 Lincoln Continental Mk 11.     Tanker-Builder

I think Eleanor is the most beautiful!

Why you ask?

Just look at her:

I bet you can't take your eyes off her!

I would have used her for cruising, nothing more, nothing less.

1962 Ferrari 250 GTO. Never a movie star. Too bad. One of the most beautiful cars to grace the highways. This car would have made Bond look really good without all of the silly accessories needed on the DB-5.

OK. In the stash: Way too much to build in one lifetime...

Yeah, my Mustang is named Eleanor thanks to that beauty.  But my idea of the most beautiful car ever is the Ford GT-40.  And guess what?  She's about to become a movie star:  Ford vs Ferrari, coming out in less than two months.

Nice call Lon - I wrestle with the 69 sportsroof and the gt-40.  If you have a chance make it out to the miller motorsports park ford museum in Toole UT (May be renamed these days).  Only place in the world where they have every Mk of the gt-40. If you're a ford guy and particularly a Shelby guy, I'd make the journey.

Thanks,

John

That one is a real beauty, but you know she is not the original Eleanor!

Unlike in the new movie, where they almost had a different car for each scene, in the first "Gone in 60 seconds", they used a single car for all the scenes/stunts!

Cheers

Yeah, I know, the original Eleanor was a 1971 Mustang.

And I will admit, I'm a car lover. Anything auto that gets posted in this thread, I'll probably druel over! I've already been doing that! And don't get me started on bikes! LOL!

Still have a fond spot for the gull wing Mercedes and the Lambo Countach.

Since I work in the auto body trade, I absolutely hate working on what I refer to as Euro Trash, but still like the looks of those.

Regarding movie cars, here are my thoughts.

Two Thumbs Up:

1989 Batmobile - People love or hate this iteration of Batman's ride, but I thought it was the most bad a** Batmobile of all time.  The long nose, low canopy and stout rear fins looked extremely sinister.  Was it built on a Chevy Impala?  The Chris Nolan Tumbler was cool from an engineering standpoint, but I hated the "loose roof shingle" aesthetics.

DeLorean DMC-12 - When "Back to the Future" hit the theaters in 1985 I thought I had died and gone to heaven.  It was love at first sight when I saw a real one going up the street in 1982, and I could not believe my favorite car was going to star in a movie.  That the movie was awesome was icing on the cake.  My obsession over the car is despite knowing it's a boulevard cruiser with unreliable British electrics.  What I'd do for an electric conversion by Tesla!  1.21 Gigawatts!!!

Lola T-70 - From "THX1138".  I have no idea if the movie had an actual designation for this car, but the almost Back to the Future looking hardware stuck on top gave the lovely T-70 a brutal, super cool look.  I find it amazing that the car had so many things that were to feature in future sci-fi cars.

Lotus Esprit Series I - The famous sub-car from "The Spy Who Loved Me".  I had read that a guy from Lotus intentionally parked the prototype car outside the studio to try to get it into the movie during produciton. Apparently it worked, and I am glad for it.  The chase scene leading up to the dive off the pier and sub transformation is one of my all-time favorites.  Caroline Munro - nuff said!

Spinner - The flying police car from "Bladerunner" has become a sci-fi icon, and is one of my favorite fictional vehicles.  It is so unique in styling that nothing before or since comes close.  I think the prop was based on a VW chassis.

Two Thumbs Down:

Lawmaster - From "Dredd".  What was that, a moped?  Hardly fitting for the most feared Judge in Megacity One.  The movie was a tremendous missed opportunity IMHO.  Karl Urban nailed Dredd's character, and was hampered only by a lack of a true super nemesis and an apparently low budget for the background.  What was that, Los Angeles?  Megacity One is all about the vertical, and yet the movie version looked flat.  Karl Urban should have requisitioned Stallone's Lawmaster and set budget.  Such a crime.

Megaweapon - The super lame super dump truck that featured in the super stupid and lame "Warrior of the Lost World".  Who'd be afraid of a black dump truck?  If I found myself in this stinker of a movie, I'd have walked off the set and forgone my $5 a day stipend.  The dumb talking motorcyle gets my hate as well.

Speeder from the Star Wars prequel - I can't be bothered to remember which movie it came from, but the speeder Anakin "borrows" looks like nothing more than a 1950's convertible hot rod, complete with blower and flame paint job.  As Deapool would say "That's just lazy writing."

Okay, I'm trying to come up with stinker car #4 and #5 and can't recall any more, so I'll leave it at that.
