Nail Polish Paint Job
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, April 12, 2004 3:05 PM

Hello,

Have any of you had experience painting car models with nail polish? I wanted to try it so I got some 'Wet and Wild' solid colors to start; nothing with floating particles or other tricky stuff. My current info says prime, thin with lacquer thinner, then airbrush...

Thanks

Hi!
Nailpolish is a great way to fancy paintjobs. I've used Modelmasters metalizer's as a basecoat and have had no problems with that. As a bonus the metalizer shines through the nailpolish as it often isn't very opaque and you can changes the apperance of the final result by variyng the basecoat's color. There is some really nice and vivid colors out there in the makeup stores. Give it a try, the only drawback as I can see it is that it smells really nasty.

Are kidding?
I love the smell of that stuff!!!
I guess it's just me!!!!
As for Airbrushing I picked up a tip that with Wet n Wild you should use 3 times as much lacquer thinner (150% Right?). You can also tone down colors with WnW's Clear polish. Haven't tried it yet. Just what I read!

I have never used nailpolish to cover an entire model, but I've used it to paint various sections, and it was absolutely great! Only thing is, make sure you buy your own, cuz my gf had a fit when she found out Big Smile [:D]

When I get it back she has used at least half the bottle, lucky for me I always buy several bottles of the same shade Wink [;)]

On a shopping trip with my g/f I discovered the Ulta 3 cosmetics store...they have a really good selection of colors, base and metallic, to say nothing of the "tools" you can find there. Exceptionally fine point tweezers, scissors, brushes, etc. Its a real treasure trove for the hobbyist...vive la femme!...lol
