Question on Indycal decals
Posted by Wild Bill on Monday, October 26, 2020 8:23 AM

Hello:  I'm using my first Indycal set on my Tamiya GT4 Mustang.  These are very different from any decals in my 30 years of adult modeling.  They seem to be printed on thin plastic or other tough backing, and have a mottled matt finish.  Overall they have worked well, but I will need to clearcoat over them to have an acceptable finish.  I have been using the Diamond clear from Zero with good results over other decals.  Can anyone give me guidance as to what will (or won't) work with these?  Thank you.

Watching.  I have the same.  And for the GT as well.  I hope it all works out as I really like the site and selection.

Thanks,

John

I just looked at the kit decals and it looks like you can sacrifice one of the Ford logos from one the end plates of the rear spoiler in an experiment.  Take a piece of scrap plastic and prep it just like you would the kit part, apply the decal, and shoot the clear.  If you go to Indycals website and go to their FAQ area, they say DO NOT use an enamel based clear as it will affect the white portions of the decals.  It says that they have tested Model Master Lacquer and TS13 from Tamiya with no ill effects.  He does recommend the use of setting solutions to help the decal bond to the paint and help prevent wrinkling.  He said acrylic water based clear coats should be safe as well.  He does recommend testing your clear coat first to be sure.
