Volvo 850 Turbo Estate
Posted by Mr Mike on Wednesday, March 3, 2021 8:39 PM

My new project is the Volvo 850 Turbo Estate also know as a station wagon.  Volvo engineers created this as a racecar for the British Touring Car Championship and they were very successful with it.  Here's a video of the car at Goodwood Festival of Speed several years ago.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJ8c8a8oEUs

My plan is to build this as a everyday hauler in red with a pearl clearcoat with a black interior.  Right now, I don't plan on adding anything extra to this build.

More Volvo to come...

Cool - had a buddy that had a 750 turbo wagon.  White with black trim.  Awesome looking car.  This should be fun.

Thanks,

John

I hope it's fun, too!

I painted the 850 Turbo Estate this afternoon with Tamiya TS-86 Pure Red.  When this has dried sufficiently, I'll clearcoat it with Tamiya Pearl Clear.

Thanks Lee!  I haven't built that many wagons over the years, but I do have a thing for hot Volvos.  I wish someone like Tamiya would release a mid-60's P1800 instead of the expensive resin versions that I have seen on the internet.

Hey!

Mr Mike! I am glad to see what you are doing .A real honest to GOD, Station Wagon!!Not another darned S.U.V.! Besides I like the Tailights on that model of VOLVO !

Thanks Tanker-Builder!  I haven't built that many station wagons, but I have built the Revell '49 Merc Woody, the Revell '48 Ford Woody, the AMT Ghostbusters Ecto 1 and the Revell Ford Exhibition, '73 Ford Bronco, Monogram Land Rover Series III and Italeri Range Rover SUVs.  I am currently working on the RoG Land Rover Series III LWB.  Yes, I said that they are SUVs!  Station wagons are fading from the automotive scene and they are being replace by SUVs.  We can't avoid it, the automotive landscape is changing.

The taillights on the '94 Volvo Estates were designed to avoid having to use the center high mount stop light (CHMSL), but it is now required on new vehicles sold in the US.  I believe that it was a loophole in the automotive requirements that Volvo exploited to their benefit.

I detailed the wheels with some Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color around the lug nuts and on the ends of the spokes by the rim.  I added the suspension and the exhaust system and finally the wheels followed by the carpeting.

What did you use for carpeting?

Me, too, Mike - I'm not a car builder, but I fell in love with the P1800S as a boy, watching Roger Moore driving one in "The Saint" on telly.  I'd certainly snap up a decent kit in, say, 1/25.

The Volvo estate is looking really good so far - I'll stick around for this one, if you don't mind?

Vell, Zaphod's just zis guy, you know?

Thanks Lee and Hutch6390!

The "carpet" is actually a piece of adhesive backed felt that came with the kit.  It is rather thin and looks good as carpet.

Hutch6390, I was watching The Saint on TV when I bacame infatuated with the Volvo P1800, as well!  Please stick around and watch!

Like it so far. The pictures of the body look like more orange red than red. Does the kit come with complete interior or racing seats?

So many kits so few hours in the day

Tamiya TS-86 Pure Red is a very bright red.  The orange may be from the lighting over the model.  This is the stock model and it has NO racing parts what so ever in it, so the kit comes with a full stock interior.

I painted the door rub strips with Model Master Acryl Gunship Grey.  I'm not 100% sure how to fix the front rub strip where the tape was removed before the paint was dried.  I touched up the body with Tamiya TS-86 Pure Red after the pictures were taken.

Only thing you really can do is lightly sand smooth, remask, repaint.

I am going to do that.  So far, I have sanded the rub strip and next is to remask the front bumper and repaint the rub strip.

I was able to sand and repaint the front bumper rub strip.  Not bad and it didn't take me too long to do it.  I spent more time masking the rub strip than anything else!  I don't have any pictures.  Sorry!

Thanks Lee!

I painted the interior with Tamiya TS-29 Semi Gloss Black.  I started detailing the interior pieces by adding a woodgrain to the center console.  I may add some woodgrain to the interior panels just below the armrests.

I applied the decals to the dash and I handpainted around the lower stack with Tamiya XF-10 Flat Brown and topped with Tamiya X-26 Clear Orange.  I did the same on the side panels and used a fine point nail dipped in Tamiya X-18 Semi Gloss Black and dotted the painted area to replicate the burled wood.  I added the decal to the steering wheel and man, this decal is tiny.  I almost lost it!  I almost painted the steering wheel hub to replicate some wood grain, but I changed my mind at the last minute.

I had painted the lower interior panels with what I thought would be a matching color to the carpet, but when the paint dried, it had changed hue.  I masked off the lowers and repainted them with Tamiya TS-29 Semi Gloss Black.  I went and painted the steering wheel rim a woodgrain color and assembled the rest of the interior.

First, I want to see you shrink yourself to 1/24 scale!

Thank you guys!

Mr Mike;

I tell the kids that visit the Museum that I live in a train car, isolated in it's own display on the layout. They ask me the same thing. I tell them and now you, it can only happen at night, when everyone is gone!

Somehow, my "Shrink-Ray" won't work in Earth's sunlight!

Somehow, I expected a response like this from you!  In sunlight, some things never appear to work unless it is dark out and when no one else is watching.  I still want to see you shrink yourself to size.  Plus, try to open the doors and start my curbside.  Now that would be amazing!
