Smoked windshield
Posted by MR TOM SCHRY on Saturday, June 5, 2021 3:46 PM

Good Afternoon Modelers,

I've recently built the orginal edition of the Tom Daniels' "Trouble Maker" El Camino funny car.  The orginal decals went south after I tried Micro Sol's decal bonder.  That was okay since I had some differnt decals in my stash that I wanted to try.  My main problem came after I had tried to smoke the windshield with Tamiya's rattle can smoke on only the inside of the windshield.  The coverage was uneven and did not look good.  What can I use to strip the smoke off and start over?  If there isn't a remedy my only other option is to buy the Atlantis version of this kit when it's released later this year.

If you don't already have them, get some isopropyl alcohol at a concentration of 91% or more, and a cheap electric toothbrush (Crest makes one that costs about 5 bucks).  Drop the windshield into a shallow container filled with alcohol and give it a soak for about 30 minutes.  After that, use the toothbrush and work over the alcohol container so you can keep dipping the part and toothbrush in the alcohol to keep everything nice and wet.  Just be gentle and patient and you should be able to get that smoke paint off of there.  You may have to follow up with a Novus polishing kit if the solvents in the paint have managed to attack the clear plastic.

Thanks!  I'll give it a try this weekend.
