Building Fujimi 1/24 Gulf GT-40 and Gulf Porsche 917
Posted by mic53mlb on Monday, November 1, 2021 8:05 AM

Hi guys,

I'm setting up to build these two Fujimi 1/24 Gulf Racing cars and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with these kits or has dealt with painting these color schemes on other kits. I'm using Tamiya spray paints ( TS-56 Brilliant Orange and TS-23 Light Blue both are gloss) for both cars with the correct color codes. Each kit comes with the orange graphics as decals. Should I use the decals or mask and paint them ?? If using decals should I seal them with a gloss clear coat or better yet use a gloss clear coat regardless ?? Both kits were quite expensive and I am a big Gulf Racing fan specifically these two vehicles and time period so I really would like to do a good job. Any and all advice and suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

The paint used on the original Gulf Fords was from Berger Paints, in Standard Truimph Powder Blue (Reference #1125) and Marigold (Reference #1456).  The Fujimi kit I have seen is for Chassis #1075 which was the Le Mans winner in 1968 and 1969.  Note that there were differences in the car between the years, and between different races in both years.  At Le Mans #1075 was race number 9 in 1968 and race number 6 in 1969.  In 1968 and 1969 the orange stripe on #1075 came to a wide scallop on the nose and carried below the headlamps to the wheel arch.  In 1968 #1076 was race number 11  and the wide orange panel came to a point at the front of the nose.  In 1969 #1076 wore race number 7 and the orange was a straight sided stripe to the front of the nose.  In 1968 chassis #1074 wore race number 10 and the orange was straight sided to the front of the nose.  In 1969 #1074 did not race for at Le Mans JW / Gulf.

I built one years ago but I don't recall which paint I used.  Here's what she looked like so you can see the decals.  It's a nice kit, pretty easy as it's a curbside

MCW, Gravity, Zero Paints and MRP all make a Gulf blue.

Thanks,

John
