1/12 Yamaha YZR-M1
Posted by Yamafreak72 on Thursday, May 13, 2004 1:02 AM
I asked this a couple months back, but does anyone know if Tamiya will be coming out with a 1/12 Yamaha M1 Moto GP bike? Like I said, I posted this same question a little while ago, right before I went on a little trip (I'm USMC) but only got "by the end of this year" as an answer. Anybody got anything more specific? I figure since Rossi's on the Yamie this year, it's only a matter of time.

To be honest, I'll be shocked if it doesn't come out this year. But that's just my gut feel, I have no facts.

As for when... Personally will not care all that much, since I've got so much catching up to do, just to get space to pack another box - not to mention justifying buying another kit to loving wife... Don't you have the same problem...? I will delay my purchase waiting for S27 or MC to do a tobacco decal set, anyways.

LMAO!!!
SeaBee, you've hit the nail on the head!! I'd love to see the new Yamaha MotoGP bike (in Rossi's colors, or course) but it'll just end up another box to store at the moment.......and the wife would harp on me to finish one before I can buy another.....too many models.....not enough time.......

Cheers, LeeTree

I JUST got caught up not too long ago after buying a bunch of Tamiya's MotoGP bikes in Thailand two years ago (they're cheap there, being right down the road so to speak). I can relate on the tobacco decals, SeaBee, I'm working on Biaggi's RC211V right now, but I just don't have the time or can't justify it to the wife to buy the Camel decals from Best1 or whoever. Not to mention I got the Gauloises set for Jacque's YZR500 and ended up waiting almost two weeks for them to ship from Singapore or someplace. I also read that Italeri has 1/9(!) scale Gauloises M1 coming out this year. Anybody know about that? Also what's Italeri's quality compared to Tamiya's? I heard the Heller YZRM1 was a POS so I never bothered. Meanwhile let's hope Tamiya removes their thumb soon.

As said, I am pretty sure they'll do so. Esp. with it being the most talked-about switch in motorsport since one Schumacher decided to leave the then rampant Benetton team to join the then relative lowly Ferrari team... and what a marriage that was, as we all know. Being a japanese manufacturer will surely help. And Vale gave them the perfect excuse to make a non-tobacco version by winning here in SA. But with new mouldings, etc. I presume it will take some time.

On to Italeri and their 1:9 range. The only 1:9 I've ever built was a Protar Rothmans Honda. And for the time (10 years ago) it was a good model. I am wondering whether the Protar bike range have gone into Italeri - or what else would have given Italeri the bee in the bonnet to go for the non-"standard" (as set by Tamiya!) sizes of 1:9 and 1:6, both previously done by Protar.
Anyways, while, you're waiting - I saw that there is a 1:9 Duck (03) being released shortly. If you're looking for something different on your shelf and to pass the time while waiting for the M1, why not...? I see on the photo that they show no Marlboro's, but as Italy is not yet on that non-tobacco trip yet, I was wondering whether it might not be included in the kit and just not displayed outside. Who knows?

And you'll most likely want to kill me for this, but I am waiting for my set of Camel decals to arrive! I am going to convert the Telefonica one to a Max version. When I bought the Telefonica one, I was not aware of the Camel bikes coming out. And allready having a Telefonica-sponsored Suzi, why not have a different colour to display...

As the others I only have guesses to come up with but as said, with this team shift from Rossi and the fact that Tamiya has released 5 Honda RCV in one and a half year, it must me a Yamaha coming out.

For Yamafreak72 I can say I have a spare sheet of Museum Collection Camel decals collecting dust if you're interested. Not Studio27 of coarse but perhaps of interest anyway?

I haven't taken any pictures of my own yet but if you're interested in my latest RCV:s (02 West, 02 Fortuna, 03 Teléfonica test) you can take a look at http://photos.yahoo.com/joelwideqvist (look under RCV:s from IPMS Open), hopefully I will add my own pics soon on my web www.onetwelvth.com

Finally someone is talking about MOTO GP! With all the kits and accessories out there I'm surprised theres not more activity. I'm working on my first motorcycle kit, Tamiya's Repsol RC211V 02'. I just finished decaling the thing, thank god for microsol!!! This is the most difficult set of decals I've ever applied. Being an aircraft modeler for the last 24 years I have never had to deal with overly difficult decals. For the last year I have started building cars and now motorcycles, it's been a lot of fun.

Hey Darren, welcome to bikes! I am quite the reverse. I've allways done racing models, be it bikes, touring cars, F1 or rally. And I like to do the occasional plane - just started my first one in about 2 years!

Anyways, you'll definitely find racing kits' decals being a different beast alltogether. The models themselves also tend to be extremely unforgiving - any tiny miss-allignment stand out glaringly, esp. is you go into the F1 side of things.

But do enjoy; hope you'll go on and get bitten by this side of the hobby as well. Hope there's many more!

Thanks SeaBee! I think I have been bitten by the motorcycle bug. I already have my next one picked out, Tamiya's Telefonica Suzuki RGV 00'. This time I want to get some aftermarket stuff for it. Scalemotorsports offers a PE detail set for that kit.

I do plan on a F1 build in the future but my work bench is currently full.

Work bench currently full...? C'mooooon, I'm sure there's a cupboard somewhere where a small box will fit into...! Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]

The 2000 is the #2 one, not the #1, or am I wrong? Anyways, just finished that one (the #2). Went together like a dream. Do enjoy!

Back to topic: I saw HLJ will bring out their show report shortly. Hopefully mention of some new bikes (other than the different decalled Honda Valencia)...

I was at TamiyaCon and someone in the know did say the YZR-M1 is on the way.
Who would really know also is Tamiya Model Magazine. They have a new website with
a new release section.

I haven't been to this site in a while, WOW, what feedback! I'm really glad to see so many Moto GP nuts out there. I'm waiting on the '03 version of Rossi's 211V right now, anybody got any aftermarket stuff for it that they might want to get rid of? Meanwhile, here I am, anxiously awaiting an M1. JOELWIDEQVIST! Awesome bikes, man! I might be interested in the decals, send me a pic if you can.

They look good, but I don't have a fresh RC211V laying around anywhwere to put them on. I don't know how soon you're looking at getting rid of them, but the wife just told me that UPS dropped off Rossi's '03 bike, and that'll take me a couple weeks at least. UNLESS-and listen to this crazy idea- anybody know how I could perhaps remove the "Biaggi", and other non-tobacco decals from my bike without doing irreparible damage? I used micro-sol, but not micro-set. If that don't work, I might have to wait until I get anothe RC211V to put those Camel decals on.

Hey, no worries! They're just laying around and they can keep on doing that until someone (you?) wants them or I get some idea to build a Camel Ducati 916 (have crossed my mind actually) but for my parts that seems to be atleast a couple of years ahead so take your time, and be calm about the misses, they won't cost you more than a thank you Wink [;)]

Well, regarding this matter it can be done if you haven't clear coated over the decals. You should be able to remove them using Micro products.

Joel,
QUITE A DEAL! Shame I'm knee-deep in the #46 trying to get the colors just right, or I'd take you up on the Camel gear now. I don't want to take away from somebody who might need them more than me for now. Also, I couldn't help but notice (yeah, like ANYBODY could) Rossi's Valencia bike is out. Am I that far out of touch, or did this take anybody else by surprise? Makes me all the more hopeful for a YZR ambush.

I really think the M1 isn't that far off. What woories me is that it will be a Rossi 04 bike wich will leave a 02 and 03 gap. The 02 is filled with some kit bashing between Hellers M1 and the Tamiya yzr 02 but the 03...? Beats me for the moment.
