Rather than paint your shoebox with flat black, consider lightening it up with some white until you get a charcoal-gray color. This will help with the look. As primer paints on real cars tended to absorb water, consider a little bit of rust-colored wash around areas where water would collect. Good luck, I dig the 49-51 Fords. Riff

The clear coat may ruin the pastel affect a bit when you cover it up. If you wait until very last to apply the pastel tehn put it on the shelf and keep hands off , it will be fine as it is. Thats the method I use on armor and on a 40's race car I did. You can go to my site on this page to see how the pastels work out .

Cool...thanks so much! A little bit of brown/rust in the right places to authenticate the look. ;)

Interesting! I wouldn't have thought about artist chalk. :)

Certainly not the only way but artist chalk and some trial and error works well. If you mess up the chalk will wipe off and you can have another go at it.

'49 Ford Paint and Aging

Hey all,

I'm about to start building an old ERTL '49 Ford model and I want to go with real flat black paint (red rims, the whole rat rod look), but I want to age the primer a little and add some patina. I'm a relative novice when it comes to model building, so I'm looking for some simple tips please.

Thanks!
