Plum Crazy?!?!
Posted by J-Hulk on Sunday, April 6, 2003 10:37 PM
I'm going to build 2 versions of a 1970 Plymouth Duster 340 (using the '1 Duster Ertl kit) that my dad bought brand-spanking-new in 1969, and I took over in 1980. He ordered it with the vinyl roof option (Why, dad? Why???), and the body color: Plum Crazy.
I rebuilt it in 1980 (it was in fairly bad shape), removing the vinyl roof and repainting the car black with a gold 340 stripe down the side.
I plan to build the car in each of those incarnations. I'll just have to modify the front grill for a '70 model.

No problems modeling the black and gold version.

My question: what color is Plum Crazy?? I know it's some kind of purple, but I don't think I'm gonna be able to find a bottle of it on the Testors rack, or even at an auto paint supply store.
Any ideas on how to mix this color?

Atuslly Testors ha Plum Crazy in their lineup. A well stocked hobbyshop should have it. Another place is Model Car World, www.ourworld.cs.com/mcwautofinishes. I know they have it. Good luck and let us see it when finished!

There's a few links for you. I thought you might enjoy those Duster pics. Maybe this will give you an idea what it looks like. The pages with the purple background take away from the color of the car though. I can't really say the Testors paint is supposed to duplicate the Mopar color but the MCW paint should. try this link...

Thanks, Wingman! Those links coupled with pix of the real car when it was new should help me get it all together.

J-Hulk, I bought a no frills version of a '70 Duster in Sept '69 to drag race with. The car had a bench seat (vinyl of course), rubber mat in a rough charcoal gray instead of carpetting and a few mechanical extras that didnt change the appearance. One interesting fact, the car came with an extra leaf spring on the right side to keep the left from lifting too much on launch. The color was Tor-red ( a reddish orange).Hope the info helps.Big Smile [:D]

That must have been a screamer! Did you keep the 340 in it? And have you made a model of it since?
Thanks for the info!

Yes, I kept the 340, curved the distributor, put on a set of headers and turned a 13.7. That wasnt to bad for a small block that was stock.. I remember when I first opened the hood and saw the flat black crinkle paint finish on the air cleaner. It looked so strange.

13.7! Quick!
Best I turned was 14.3 at 108mph, all street-stock, besides a set of headers. And that was when the car was 15 years old, back in 1984! Dad never ran it for times when he got it, but I wonder how it did when it was new.
Yes, the black crinkle "340" air cleaner. The memories...I painfully sold it in 1986...big mistake!

Anybody know a good source for 1/25 Cragar SS wheels? Bigs and littles.

Revell's 70 Torino kit, I think the Cobra version, But could be the GT, has 'em. I'll check in a day or two and e-mail you J-Hulk, when I finsd out, I have both kits.

Thanks, Sir!
Someone oughta (maybe they do?) offer aftermarket scale wheels. Fujimi does, but it's all for Toyotas, Mazdas, Porsches, Ferraris, etc.
No Cragars, Keystones, or Centerlines!

MRC has both a set of Keystones, and a set of Cragars with tires. Should be able to get them at a well supplied hobby shop. Still haven't had a chance to check out my Torino kits. Will try this afternoon.
