Chasis and Engine Compartment Colors???
Posted by rodc on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 10:51 AM
I am getting ready to start my next model car kit (my 2nd) and was wondering what colors you guys would use for painting the undercarriage as well as engine compartment?

I used black on my first car as per the instructions but it just does not look right.

I'll appreciate your input! Thanks.

It depends on the car. Most cars have multiple types of metal and plastic on the underside. These come in various shades of bare metal, silver, and black. Most engine compartments are the same color as the body and have heat shields and other metal, plastic and fabric sections under the hood too that are various colors as well. Sorry I can't be more specific, but what are you building?

I like to use semi gloss, gloss and flat black in different areas to add some variation instead of all flat black.
When in doubt just build it. Mark http://www.ipmslivonia.org/ipms/

Most cars have engine compartments that are the same color as the exterior, except they are flat. I'm talking about inner fenders and firewalls. I know that there are exceptions to the rule but most cars I look at (and I'm a sales manager for a Nissan dealership) are that way.

HEY,
I usually use krylon ultra flat black fr the chassis, and the body color for the engine compartment.

Since each make of car varies, you could do a search for the particular car. Most of the time you can find good ref pics that will lead you in the right direction.

When I paint the undercarage i use the same color as the car and paint the frame either flat black or gloss black and detail the cables and wires (if they have them in the mold). As far as the engine compartment I use gloss black on the fenderwalls and the color of the car as time on the firewall. This allows you to detail the wires and cabels (agian if they are there). HTH
