Anybody out there building Rally Cars?
Posted by ChrisJPB on Saturday, October 23, 2004 3:03 AM
I have quite a few kits that I have been wanting to build of Rally cars new and old. I just thought that there might be someone with a similar interest that could get me motivated. Right now I have Hasegawa's Lancia 037 kit on the bench. I also have been trying to get a Tamiya Fiat 131Abarth kit built.
Just curious if anybody has simular interest.

I've been building rally cars for about 20 years, the Esci Monte Carlo Porsche was the first I think and the Haseqawa Safari Corolla WRC is the current build. One of the best was a 1/12th Stratos (also a Safari car) and another great kit which I have barely started is the Tamiya 1/12th 240Z Safari winner. Most of my rally cars are 1/43rd but about 20 are 24th or 12th.

When in doubt just build it. Mark http://www.ipmslivonia.org/ipms/

It's great to find people with the same interest. I have always read the posts on this forum but rarely participate. I keep seeing people doing group builds. Is there any interest in doing one on this subject?

Besides the Lancia and Fiat that are on the bench I have Gunze Sangyo's 1/24 Triumph TR7 Rally car kit that I would like to detail as the kit is a curbside plastic toy. I am having some wheels casted in resin and replacing the kit wheels and replacing the windshield wipers with photoetch wipers. This is going to be interesting as the kit has part of the wiper molded on the body and the old part molded on the clear windshield. Also I want to add some seatbelts to spice up the interior a little. Has anybody done this kit?

I'd be interested in a rallycar GB too. I'm actually building 2 rally cars for the Racing Car GB at present. There are several others also doing rally cars so its more of a competition car GB rather than strictly racing.

Chris I built a 1/24th TR7 rally kit years ago but it wasn't the Gunze kit but I can't remember which it was. It was somewhat inaccurate being a left hooker when it should have been a right hand drive for the particular driver they provided the decals for.

I purchased a Haseqawa Stratos kit at a LHS sale last week which I will do as the 1974 San Remo car (Studio 27 decal kit). This was a Marlboro car and didn't have the rear and roof wings.

Thanks for pointing that out to me! You might have built this kit then because it is a "left hooker" too. It's really a simplistic kit. It's really meant to be a toy. Geez, I lived in the UK for 4 years and that never dawned on me. I guess I can add cutting up the dash to my list of modifications. Thanks nicholma!

hi Chris, I'm building the Lancia 037 (Revell boxing) over in the Race Car Group Build at the moment.

Just to complicate matters, I've also added some Eduard metal "Sabelt" belts and the photoetch kit (Renaissance I think) which though made for the Hasegawa seems to fit so far Wink [;)] I've just dumped the two Tamiya driver figures, it was taking too long for me to get them right.

I've also got a Tamiya Renault Alpine A110 in the queue, with 1971 Monte Carlo decals, and am planning on building up some more historic cars from the 60s, 70s and 80s. These bog-standard modern WRC things don't appeal to me at all Tongue [:P]
On the bench: 1/35 Dragon Sturmpanzer Late Recent: Academy 1/48 Bf-109D (Nov 06) Academy 1/72 A-37 (Oct 06) Revell 1/72 Merkava III (Aug 06) Italeri 1/35 T-26 (Aug 06)

Hi! I Don't build rally cars myself, but know of a company in the UK. called M.R.M.
They make GRP bodies for Rally cars and can supply loads of transkits for the mainstream rally car kits. Stock loads of photo etched parts and decals etc.
Only place I know of where you can get a METRO 6R4 in 1/24 scale as well as a Mk1 Ford Escort. They even do parts to convert the Esci Mk 2 Escort into Roger Clarke's Cossack sponsored rally car. Also, as they are well into rally cars they know a lot of good modellers in the UK. Hope this is of help. They probably have a website.
There is another company called Grand Prix Models who stock mostly 1/43rd scale kits.

Thanks Noel for the info. I have seen the Roger Clarke Cossack Escort in one of the UK Model mags. I appreciate your input.

Hey U-96, I have found this tip for the Lancia 037 that I tried and it worked pretty good. The rear grill on the car is a solid piece but if you carefully sand the backside of the part until the openings are almost see through. Then carefully pop the openings out with an exacto knife and it's just like photoetch only in plastic. Adds realism.

Yes I'v heard of MRH as well. I think they advertise in TMMI or Scale Models International but I've never seen a review of any of their kits. I've seen a rather poor photo of their 6R4 which looked a bit odd but that was probably the photo not the kit. I tried a quick search but got around 15000 hits on M.R.H. so didn't proceed beyond the first page.

I have a Hasegawa Possum Bourne 94 Hong Kong -Beijing Rally winning Subaru WRX, a Possum 99 season Subaru WRC and enough kits to build his 2000,2001,2002 and 2003 season cars. I have a couple of extras too I think of the 2001 car plus the Italeri Subaru Transporter.
Have Tamiya Mitsi Evo VI, Ford Focus and a couple of Hasegawa Corolla rally cars somewhere in a box too I think. Like other cars as well though.
Cheers
Tony

Hey Tony,

There's a group build going on if you care to join. I'm thinking of dropping the WRC part and opening to all rally cars.

Great dio Scott Wow!! [wow]Thumbs Up [tup]
